Is Jesus talking to himself when he asks his father to relieve him from his mission? Why was he reluctant? I hope there are genuine reflective answers without regurgitation...

The Savior is praying to God the Father here -- I personally love this. It truly shows how Jesus Christ understood His mission and what the atonement would require. It was a bitter and painful experience, one no mortal could survive. Only because His Father was God could the Savior fulfill this task. He understood His role -- that as a perfect, flawless sacrifice, He could satisfy the demands of justice upon the sins of all mankind and grant each of us mercy -- through His grace and virtue, we might be cleansed of our sins. Here also, He showed humility and obedience. The Plan of Salvation demanded a Savior and the Christ had volunteered for the job.
Although I have an understanding of what occurred in Gethsemane and upon the Cross, I do not think I fully comprehend the eternal laws and truths involved.
Reluctance? no more than any soldier before a battle which must be waged.
Thanks for the question. I enjoyed contemplating the answer.
Best wishes

I really do think that Jesus was reluctant, or at least fearful of what he was about to go through. He was about to face an extremely difficult challenge: atoning for the sins of the world. We do not understand the process completely, but this was very likely the most painful experience anyone on Earth has ever suffered. I would even say that at this time, Jesus probably had a better understanding of how much pain he was going to experience than when he signed up for the job. He pleaded with Father for another way, if it were possible. He was essentially looking for a way out. Nevertheless, he was obedient to the will of the Father. He did what he had to do... because he loves us.

Do I think that Jesus was talking to himself? No, I do not, for various reasons. It does not seem reasonable that he could forsake himself in the midst of his own agony, and then proceed to ask himself why he had forsaken himself. It is written that he sits on the right hand of God. If Jesus sits on the right hand of himself, then are we to conclude that his other self also sits on the right hand of himself, or does he then sit on the left hand of himself? It is understood that Jesus is the Mediator between God and man. A mediator is a neutral third party that intervenes between two separate parties. If God is considered to be the first party, and we are the second party, Jesus must be the third party; it doesn't make sense for the first party to intervene or mediate between the first and second parties; to do so would eliminate the need for a third party (i.e., the Mediator). I could go on, but I'll stop there. I decided to modify my answer because I felt that my initial response was too regurgitative. I feel better now. :)

Well, for one thing (no sarcasm intended), I would be reluctant too, knowing what kind of pain was coming up. This passage shows that (and I expect a lot of downward thumbs just for this next line) he WAS also 100% man to go with his 100% God. He wanted to avoid pain, just like anyone else would have. Was he talking to himself? No, not at all -- he was talking to the Father, the first part of the Trinity -- and I know, even Christians are divided among themselves on THAT issue.
No regurgitation.
Have a great night!

I wouldn't use the word reluctant, because JESUS was always willing to do those things that the FATHER desired of HIM. HE simply posed a request to accomplish the will of HIS FATHER without having to separate from HIM for the very first time ever. JESUS did not waver, neither was HE fearful, but always faithful and steadfast. HE had to be absolutely perfect to be a sacrifice exceptable to GOD.

The cup refers to His up and coming crucification. He, being a man, as in human being with all of its emotional and cognitive expressions. He also had the knowledge and wisdom of God, because He grew in that stature - check the scriptures. He knew what was about to take place. A man just does not want to die. It is not human willfully do so with full knowledge as to its circumstances.

He also in that full knowledge and wisdom knew that the will of God is more important than ones own. Given the fact that He chose to live a perfect righteous life before God in the Jewish manner, He had to obey God.

He is praying to the Father. He is wishing another way, but knowing God's will must be done. I thank God He did obey.

Well, he knew what was coming. Who would not be reluctant to get arrested and interrogated, and killed. He KNEW how painful it would be. How could he not want to avoid it.

The reason the Centurions calle dhim a "son of god" (in the Roman sense, ont the uncreated yet Christian belief) was because he held to his story and told the truth and was honest to the end.

I think Jesus was speaking to his higher consciousness or spiritual self.
Being created in the image of God....the spiritual aspect of mankind is the purpose or highest truth of each persons life, so I think Jesus was speaking to that part of himself.

Lords Prayer also includes the line....Thy will be done in Heaven as it is on earth.

It must have been difficult for Jesus to fulfil his purpose on this earth without any doubts or reluctancy. The saviour of the world or a spiritual master.....regardless of how each of us perceives his purpose on earth, Jesus was a man with human feelings and emotions.

This was the physical side of Jesus speaking. He was wanting an easier or less painful way to do what He came to do.

Even though Jesus was God, He was also man. He knew the pain and anguish the cross would be. It is said to be one of the most painful deaths there are.

Jesus knew God would turn His back on Jesus when Jesus took my sins. He had no sins but He died for me...

No he was not talking to himself. Take time and review the entire statement! He starts by referring to His Father in Heaven.

Jesus WAS talking of Himself! He was afraid to die! It proves Jesus was FULL MAN...The scripture said He set aside His Diety and Glory as GOD ...SUBMITTED AND HUMBLED HIMSELF..to come to earth as a HU -MAN...to carry out GOD the FATHER’s plan of salvation to save the human race from God’s judgement of death for their sins
The whole human race had been currupted by the SIN of rebellion/disobedience through our first biological parents ..Adam and Eve when they disobeyed God’S instructions by listeninng to the TRICKERY of Satan..God’s enemy. Satan trickery , robbed them of the authority God gave them to govern the earth. When they sin..They gave their authority to satan and became his slave to sin sickness and disease. . God..who is HOLY.. requires a sacrifice for SIN…DEATH! However he wanted to be reconciled to HIS children..and would not allow Satan to win. BUT NO HUMAN was found perfect enough ..or worthy enough to be accepted by God to die on behalf of the whole Human race for their sins. So God ..A GREAT LOVING FATHER...who is ALSO a God of Judgement ...In His great Love and Mercy for us HIS creation...in order to OVERIDE His own imminent Judgement of death for sins...send HIS SON Jesus...(who is Also GOD... a member of the God-head.. Father Son and Holy Spirit)… to come as a MAN…not as God…to die for the sins of the human race.
Jesus NEVER knew what it felt like to be a man until he became a Man! THEREFORE...AS A MAN...Jesus Displayed the same Human emotions we have ...FEAR ! He knew what was ahead of him in terms of the crucifixion..I believe God and the Holy Spirit told him….and he became humanly fearful..he dreaded the experience...and thus asked God..His Father..if he could use another plan...except the cross...he admitted he was fearful...but he let God know even though he was fearful...He is still willing to CARRY OUT his father God's Plan...even if he Jesus does not want to do it. Just like us .. Jesus depends on the help of God the Holy Spirit to carry out supernatural things in the earth.. So with the help of the Holy Spirit…Jesus was able to carry out the mission God sent him on! Jesus..now a member of the Human race..had to be tested ..and tempted and tried ..to prove himself worthy to die for the sins of the world. Like the natural animal Lamb..that had NO BLEMISH..or it would not be accepted...that God required the jews to sacrifice for thier sins..before jesus came, Jesus had to be tested and proved to have NO BLEMISH/SIN for God to accept him as A SACRIFICE. So when Satan tempted him in the Wilderness..when he was hungry..and also in the the garden of gethsemane not to go to the cross.. Jesus Proved Himself worthy and did not fall for the temptation as ADAM DID Jesus WAS TEMPTED by Satan with every sins we Humans experienced AND HE DID NOT SIN! If he did, he would not have been accepted by God as a sacrifice and the whole human race would be lost to Satan
. Jesus is called the 2ND ADAM…as Jesus temptation was the SAME scenario beign replayed as was in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. The human race got a second chance in the game of life…and JESUS became OUR VICTOR…WHEN HE RESISTED TEMPTATION AND OVERCAME DEATH..beacuse there was NO SIN found in HIM! NOW…whatever JESUS DID…we can now do…we can live a holy life by accepting Jesus into our hearts and obeying the Holy Spirit who God sent to help us. That it is why it is difficult for TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST to Sin…they have to WILL themselves to sin. Sin does not come easy as it use to…because we have been BORN AGAIN in our spirit …given a second chance to accomplish what God intented in the first place in the garden of Eden.
To make the playing field fare…Satan is still allowed to hang around to test us…until God decides satan time is up and declares GAME OVER! Prizes will be handed out to those who follow Jesus and overcame Satan! And those who make the CHOICE NOT to follow Jesus Christ…Will join Satan in HELL…Satans home God prepared for Satan’s eternal punishment. Hell was made FOR Satan and his demons..NOT for Humans! Humans go to Hell BY CHOICE…when they REFUSE to accept GOD’S WAY OF ESCAPE ..the MAN JESUS CHRIST…the Sacrificial Lamb who died for their sins.
To get into a country or kingdom…one have to get a passport or visa or entry as prescribed by the government of the land. For those who HAVE heard the gospel of Jesus Christ…Jesus Christ is the “PASSPORT/VISA” to get into heaven as prescribed by God..the owner of heaven and earth! Those who have never heard about Jesus…the scriptures said God will judge them by their conscience and laws of right and wrong that he had written on their hearts. Every nation whether or not they believe in God..by nature knows right from wrong..because He wired us with a conscience…HE WROTE HIS LAW on our hearts.
To qualify to enter the Olympics..one have to meet a time requiements. Heaven is No different…to enter heaven..one have to meet a requirements of GOD…ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS LORD AND SAVIOR! He is the one who paid for your sins.
