Prepare your kid for the real world ahead. Otherwise you are setting him up for big disasters about grown-up things in life that are important - money management, marriage, friends, education, health, job, etc. If you set up a methodology on how to handle the little things then it is a habit that will lead to how he learns to make decisions on the big things later. Children do not think like adults and they need guidance.
On the flip side, would you rather see your kid in this situation:
[him]: So I cheated, I sort of know that it was not good...
[her]: Well, duh! I am disappointed and hurt!
[him]: My mother does not ever get that mad at me. You should always be sweet and forgiving if you truly love me.
[her]: Is there something you do not understand???
[him]: Mom, tell me you still love me and make that meanie leave.

I think it is necessary. When we learn things that are not pleasing to us, it is not easy to admit it. Sometimes telling us isn't always enough...we choose to learn the hard way. If that is the case, the lesson is still learned. Tough love is just that, tough on everyone. The one doing the loving and the one receiving the love.

you are still struggling with your son aren't you?
I am charging mine $20.00 a night to stay in my home. Once there is enough money in that jar I am going to take him to get an apartment with his own money. He does not know that and to him I am a prick.
I don't know the details of your situation but, try to find someway that is a positive for both of you. There is a solution for every problem. Be honest with yourself and him. Respect yourself and encourage him to become respectable. Meditate and try to let your mind go quite. Trust yourself and trust him to the appropriate level that he deserves.

Out of respect to you, I won't repeat your situation on here because it's not my place, but knowing you like I know you, and knowing your situation, and somewhat can relate to it but in a different way, it sounds as if you do need to take the tough love approach. It's not always easy and it breaks our hearts, but sometimes you do get put in that position!
My prayers for you, sweetie!

I think it's fine in a few particular circumstances. It also depends on what exactly you include under the description "tough love".

sometimes it's the only thing in our power that we have left to do, if you care about someone enough, and refuse to give up on them, no matter how hard it may be, it's something necessary to make the right. it will all be woth it in the end. god bless you.
