All depends on how serious the initial violation was. You can be cited for failure to carry or produce. Of course the Officer could check to see if you do have a valid license. If you receive a citation, just bring your license to court. The Judge could either find you guilty, or dismiss the charge. It's your responsibility to have your license with you.

Some cops don't want to deal with the paperwork. Plus if you do get cited then usually you can go to court and show that you did have a valid drivers license at the time of the citation and they will dismiss the fine. But if you choose to go to court then the cop has to go too which is another reason why some don't bother.

Of course, its called "Driving without a license"

Typically you'll be able to get it tossed simply by showing up at the courthouse at a later time with your license in hand, but that is completely at the discretion of the officer that pulls you over.

Yes - you can be cited for drving w/o a license in your possession (assuming there's nothing else involved). In California, it's an infraction - not a big deal, unless it's also suspended/revoked.

its not really a big deal... if u get a ticket for not having ur license just go to the court house on your assigned day show them your license and they should dismiss the case.

are you in the US? what state? I believe they allow you time to report to the police station with the license. That is the way it used to be anyway.

Without having any identification the police hold the right to detain you for 24 hours.

i heard it's not nearly as bad, if you can remember your drivers license number, even if you don't have the card itself.
