The age of consent varies from state to state; its as low as 16 in some and 18 in others. Each state has different rules too concerning it, so you should read up on your state. You might want to consider giving it some time anyways, most people will look down on you for having sex at this point in your relationship.

Parents can NOT consent the protections afforded by law to the minors away. You are probably talking about sex. If someone is under the age of 18, he or she can NOT consent to sex. Parents can not give a consent on their behalf either.

Now, let's look at practical side of things. Statutory rape charges are most often filed by parents of minor children against an adult. With nobody complaining, police and the district attorney does not get involved. While technically, it IS illegal, it happens all the time. With no one complaining, our legal system has more pressing matters to tend to.

With THAT said, parents can change their mind, and the fact remains 16 year old does not have the enough experience to give an informed consent to such things. As an adult (well... almost) 20 year old should know better. I wouldn't do it, if I were you.

By the way, yes, some states do allow marriage with parental consent for 16 year old. Short of actually getting married to each other (which basically nullifies the statutory rape concern), the age of consent is still 18 in ALL States.

It's not parental consent, it's LEGAL. Check your state's laws.

There are young men all over this country who have to register as a sexual predator for the rest of their lives because they got involved with a girl who was not legally able to consent, and it doesn't matter if she made all the moves first. Any sexual contact with a girl the state feels is too young is dangerous to your future.

Think long and hard about having to go to all of your neighbors to tell them that their kids have to stay away from your house, and can only come over if an adult is there. Think about law enforcement and a conservative public judging you and publicly belittling you.

I have a real problem with the way the law treats teens. Teens are growing up very fast, and we still treat them like they are too stupid to have a clue; even though they are more astute than we give them credit for.

I would find out what the laws of consent are for your particular state/province/whatever, and make sure you keep things very public with her until she reaches that age: Go to restaurants, movies, coffee shops, and always have her meet you there, dropped off by her parents. Often, the appearance of impropriety is more damning than actual impropriety.

To be old-fashioned, I'm sure many people will judge this person, but look back to a time when men went out in the world, got jobs, lived on their own, and then married young women (16-22 year-olds) once they were established and had something to offer.

I know when I was 16, I wanted very little to do with boys my own age, and guys in their 20's had a lot more to offer.

It depends on the state law. Some states the age of consent is 16, but not many. If the 16 year-old was to get pregnant and the age of consent is 17 and the doctor knows the dad is 20m he has a duty to report this and the DA will look into the case.

Check the state laws *or country if you are not in the US* for legal consent for sex. Because if the 16 year old is not of legal age to consent by law, then it really doesn't matter what the parents say. The courts can press charges even if everyone consents.

Also if you are military make sure you check their regs as they used to be different then the state laws.

Your parents left the field wide open, if you wish to marry, you can do that with parental permission too. The only thing to stop whatever is going on, depends on where you live and what the age of sexual consent is. Should you`re romance fall apart, in some places the male could be charged with statutory rape, or corrupting the morals of a minor.

This is a very vague question to me or perhaps I am not reading it correctly. My apologies.

If you mean what can or cannot be done between the ones in the relationship then I would assume that if both parties parents consent then they can go all the way. Even get married if they wanted to.

depends upon the state you live in and what the rules are for that state. most states at age sixteen you are at the age of consent and the parent cannot do much... even at 14 a girl can get birth control without parents consent.

in the state of georgia a 16 year old can get married with parental permission.

if they are having sexual relations it is illegal and even if the 16 year old is consenting if the police find out about the 20 yr old WILL be arrested for statutory rape. The law is the law.

unfortunately, it would be considered stat. rape. the tricky thing is, if she consents now, later (for example) a lot of young girls just cry rape as a way to get back at a guy when they break up, not realizing how serious the accusation is. just be careful and be smart. if you really care about her, you can wait a few years.

also, to everyone telling him to find someone his own age, i'm sure you know plenty of people who are dating, maybe even married, that are 4 or more years apart, so it's not that outrageous. chill out.
