Should I be afraid of this moron - husband of my niece who's been abusing her and is threatening to come to my house with a gun? I am trying to give her some kind of protection so she can get the nerve to denounce him. She totally stricken with fear!

The first method any bully / abuser uses is threats.
Whether he is too cowardly to follow through on any of it is another matter. The fact that he has been abusing your niece means that he is a big guy with the "little man syndrome"... he has to dominate someone to feel big. A sorry git.
Your niece has been threatened and beaten into being afraid to move. I would suggest filing a report with the police, using the answering machine to screen calls, don't let the niece answer the door, and move forward with legal proceedings. The better a stand you can make up front, the more likely he will be afraid to show up.
Because of the nature of this situation, you should consider taking your niece down to the local women's shelter to get counseling and a referral on an attorney that works on a sliding scale... your niece is entitled to 1/2 of all assets accrued during the marriage. Think about it... 1/2 of his 401K through that time would be enough to give her a fresh start. And she can get the courts to handle it all.

File a complaint with the police and get your niece out of there.

With everything that is going on in this world, I would take it serious. If you can get a restraining order, do so. Better safe than sorry. Good luck!

be afraid and if he threatened you call the police, file a report and get a restraining order immediately.
