How do I go about finding a doctor or my medical records for a surgery that was performed in 1994? He was a private practice and I think has retired as he's no longer listed in the clinic or hospital of which the surgery was performed. I'd like to have a copy of my medical records from this surgery as I was never fully explained, at the time, what was taking place and how I'd feel afterwards. I was young, dumb, and eighteen.

All your medical records belong to the hospital or the health care facility where you had your surgery done but you got your right to access your own records.

however, the problem is that the clinic and the doctor are no longer there. Generally, informations on medical records are supposed to be kept for 7 years or longer in some circumstances. For example, children's records are supposed to be kept until the child reaches the age of responsibility at 20 years. So if you are 18 years at time of surgery, the file must had been destroyed as 13 years had passed. If you are now 18 years which would mean you are a child when you had surgery, then the file is supposed to be kept elsewhere legally.

What you can do is try to find out if that health care facility had merged with another facility. If your doctor or health care provider goes out of business, try to find out where they had stored the medical records of their patients. That won't be an easy job to do though but you may give some try if you are really in need to know your past records. The Department of Health may give you a clue about that health care facility so you may give a try inquiring in there. Do not keep your hopes high though.

Anyway, it may be difficult finding out that record now. So from now on, you may be interested in keeping a copy of your health records for future use. You have all your rights in obtaining that.
