I have a 1978 Chevy Caprice Wagon with a 350 engine. The car is rusted out, it has 342,000 miles on its origional engine and transmission. The car runs like new yet, and is very quiet. I changed oil every 3000 miles and kept up the maintenance according to the owner's manual. I have never had any trouble with this car, and the mechanic said that according to the compression test, it could go about another 100,000 miles. The car starts good every day, even in the cold. I might never find another car as durable as this one. Should I recondition the body on it?

Call the Smithsonian, tell them what you got, they'll put that in a museum
You got your nickels worth out of that one

You should call General Motors and tell them about it. How is it possible to have logged that many miles on an original engine and trans????? Wow! Hard to believe. But seriously....how much will a "recondition" of the body cost? Likely thousands if it's rusty and you want it done correctly. But then you still have a $1000 78 Chev. Sentimental or not it doesn't seem worth it.

i wouldn't put a lot of money in to it,any 350 with that many miles will sooner or later give problems, and when it does it wont be worth spending a lot of money on it,if it were me id drive it until it died and donate it to someone or a charity or the junk yard, its just not wise to spend money on an older vehicle like that ,good luck, its possible it may run another 100 k.

I wouldn't. Drivetrains and suspensions can be replaced and repaired but rust is forever. Rust repairs never seem to last. More rust is hiding somewhere else on the car.
