What kind of field is Rad Tech? Is it competitive or is it fairly easy to get a job once you have your degree? What kind of work do they do? What kind of salary do they make? Is this a job that will be around for many many years? Is it better than being a Respiratory Care Therapist?

Don't forget, I answered your question before, and the title is radiologic technologist, not technician. You can always find a job somewhere, although you may have to start at the bottom and work your way into the shift that you want. I can't imagine x-rays going anywhere for a very long time. This is the American Society of Radiologic Technologist's most recent salary survey: https://www.asrt.org/content/rts/surveyresults/wageandsalarysurvey/wagesalsurvey2007.aspx

We do all types of x-rays:
Chest
Ribs
Sternum
Soft Tissue Neck
Abdomen
Cervical Spine
Thoracic Spine
Scoliosis Series
Lumbosacral Spine
Sacrum and Coccyx
Sacroiliac Joints
Pelvis
Hip
Skull
Facial Bones
Mandible
Zygomatic Arch
Temporomandibular Joints
Nasal Bones
Orbits
Paranasal Sinuses
Toes
Foot

Ankle
Tib-Fib
Knee
Patella
Femur
Fingers
Hand
Wrist
Forearm
Elbow
Humerus
Shoulder
Scapula
Clavicle
Acromioclavicular Joints
Bone Survey
Long Bone Measurement
Bone Age
Soft Tissue/Foreign Bodies

Plus other types of exams:
Esophagus
Swallowing Dysfunction Study
Upper GI
Small Bowel Series

Surgical Cholangiogram
ERCP
Cystogram
Cystourethrogram
Intravenous Urogram
Retrograde Pyelogram
Hysterosalpingogram

Venogram
Portable x-rays
OR cases using a C-arm

You can also cross-train in mammography, CT, MRI, bone densitometry, or cardio-vascular radiography.

Nobody can answer if it's better than respiratory except you.

a radiologic technician is basically take x-rays or ct and mri's. it's actually a growing field so it shouldn't be tough. the average salary would be about $35,000 - $40,000 entry level but it depends where you work generally hospitals pay less the medical laboratories.
