I pay £45 a week for a room in a shared house with a bunch of lads who get on great and laugh a lot. My only bills are electric tokens which is £10 / week and as i have fiddled the meter in my room and keep all the tokens for powering the cooker so they then come into food costs and not rent. There is no council tax to pay as that is paid by the land lord.I am a self employed fridge engineer and earn £175 /day .So i can nearly pay my rent in the 1st day of the month ,in fact i spent 5 months in thailand from last xmas and the rent cost me £1000 while i was away . It puzzles me that people can have it in there mind that is ok to earn a £1000 / month and then have £800 of bills ,what is life about at the end of the day . I can only see that it is so they can show off to there mates that they have a sexy little flat or nice house, but no money and worrying credit card bills. One thing about my situation is that i couldn't bring a nice classy bird back to mine could i ? But if i want a classy perfect bird ,i can afford to hire one for the night coz i haven't got crippling bills .Well thats my two penneth.

It depends on what country you're in for a start! Then it depends what area of the country you live, as in the UK the further north you are normally means it's cheaper.

The best thing to do is look in your local paper at houses up for rent and get an idea of the prices in your area. Or go to an estate agent.

Remember that on top of rent you need to take into account food, gas, electric, water, council tax, Phone/ internet bill, TV bill (say if you have Sky etc...) and petrol money (if you drive).

Then work out how much you will have left for yourself each month and decide if you can survive on that much.

Happy Hunting!

It can vary a lot depending on where you live. For a decent 2 bedroom apartment where I live it's about $400-500/month. I bought a house last October but the apartment I lived in before that was a nice 2 bedroom in a good neighborhood. It was $425 (landlady knocked off $25 b/c we mowed the lawn and shoveled).

To find out what it would cost in your area I would start checking the newspaper for apartment listings and arrange to see some in person. Then you can get a feel for what the going rate is and how nice of an apartment you can afford. You may be able to get a cheaper place if you don't mind living in a less desirable neighborhood or don't need a lot of amenities (washer/dryer hookups, yard or basement access, hardwood floors).

I live in London in the UK and it is one of the most expensive places to live, my rent is £265 per week for a 2 bedroom flat (one room is like the size of a shoe box) and then there are the bills on top, council tax, gas, electric, water rates, TV license, phone bill, plus food and travel on top.

I live in the UK in South Cambs and I pay £79 per week (2 bedroom council house) but that is rent only, don't forget you will need money for council tax (mine is about £110 per month), electricity (I pay £40 per month) gas/heating ( i don't have gas but pay £30 towards heating costs) food bills (varies, about £60 per week) water rates (mine is £30 per month) phone bills (£50 per month including broadband) and that is just the basics!

I pay almost 800 a month (1 bed./1 bath). That is relatively cheap for the apartment and area. You will have to research your area to get a good idea.
