I'm looking for a shotgun for my husband, preferably Remington or Mossberg. I want something in a 12 gauge with interchangeable chokes. He already has a Mossberg 500, but we cannot get the choke out. He would use the new one primarily for waterfowl (ducks, geese), but would like to be able to change the choke for turkey. I'm not looking to spend more than about $400. One that comes in a camo would be nice, but not necessary. Suggestions???

I would try the Remington SPR453, It has a MSRP of about $480 and come with 4 screw in chokes, all approved for steel shot. I honestly think that is the only one you can get away with withour going over $500.

The Remington 870 is probably the finest shotgun for its price on the market. A good gunsmith can bore and thread the muzzle to accept chokes, but the longest barrel for this shotgun is already full choke and most of the later models will take a 3" magnum shot shell. Make sure to check both receiver and barrel as some older models won't take the pressure of a magnum. The barrel will be marked on the left side as its pointed away from you, and the receiver will be marked on the left side also.

If he's fine with just one gun, look at getting him a replacement barrel for his 500.

Or, if you think he would like something new, a Remington 870 Express Magnum (2 3/4" or 3") would be an awesome choice. If he wants to shoot 3 1/2" loads for turkeys, the Remington 870 Express Super Magnum (all three shell sizes) is what you want.

If the choke tubes are jammed, you can take it to a gunsmith and have it removed, and replaced. It is probably either rusted into place or cross-threaded.

Or you can buy him a new barrel for his existing shotgun. For $400.00 you can buy him a 26" barrel with screw-in chokes and a 20-24" rifled barrel for slugs, and have enough left over to buy a case of shells.

As for the new shotgun, look at a Mossberg M-835, it is a 12 gauge chambered for the 3 1/2" shells and overbored to give near 10 gauge performance with 12 gauge recoil.

Merry Christmas!

Remington 870. The most bang for your buck especially around Christmas. It might be hard to find it in camo, but the company will do it for you or you can probably get it "dipped" at a local gunsmith. For duck hunting I would recommend an auto loading Remington, but I believe you will be paying more than $400 for one. I've heard good and bad from Mossberg. Never shot one though so I can't tell you from experience. What I can tell you is that in the duck blind my Remington 1100 has not jammed once and my friends' Brownings and Mossbergs have all jammed. Good luck.

The Remington 870 pump shotgun is the standard by which all domestic shotguns are compared. It has been around since 1950.

You can actually buy new barrels for your housbands mossberg that he can change himself in less than 30 seconds. Go to a gunshop and ask them there, are many to choose from and they will find what is best for what your housband wants to hunt.

then you could purchase him special turkey chokes, lots of ammo, and other hunting related items for him with the remaining money

Mossberg 500 is detachable barrel- at least brothers is, has 26 inch modified choke barrel and another deer slug barrel. Can you get another barrel from gunsmith with interchangeable choke tubes?
