I think people; both Christians and non Christians; and believers and non believers; do not realise that Christmas or Christs/ mas is not so much about Jesus or Christians only; as much about the message of joyously celebrating the life and the results of the work, actions and performances of self; and essentially by sharing such results with the world of self with a sense of the purity of snow, feel of clarity of the clear Sky's of Christmas, and the bliss full state of the being of self in the form of the Santa.
I wonder why Christians or so called believers in Jesus know the world of themselves as belonging to only those; who like themselves are followers of Jesus and Christianity only; and not to those who are either followers of other sects of the one religion of god or are non believers in sects created by man.
I think Christians have really failed to get the message of sacrifice and delivearance which Jesus delivers today also; and have instead chosen to fore sake such sacrifice and enjoy Christianity as the right and the world of self only, for self only, by self only, and with self only,

Because originally it was a pagan and heathen celebration of the Solstice, Yule and the birth of several savior deities (Horus, Mithra, etc)
Christianity made the holy day one of theirs to lure pagans into the new religion. There's nothing original in the Christian holiday that didn't come from paganism.
Decorations * a tree inside the house * candles lit all night (or lights) * exchanging gifts * mistletoe * toasting each other * feasting * gathering family together * burning a Yule log * celebrating a savior's birthday on the 25th - all of those things are pagan.
Added: I don't celebrate Christmas - we celebrate the 12 days and nights of Yule. On Christmas Day - since the nation forces a holiday on everyone - we go to a National Park and enjoy the snow with the non-Christian tourists. There is no Christ in sight in our celebrations, cards, decorations or rites.

Because it has become so commercialized that any religious meaning is nearly completely devoid. The Supreme Court agrees because they delivered an opinion that christmas displays that included religious symbols were now so secular that they were acceptable.
And because it has traditionally been a time of year borrowed from the pagans with which to get together, have a good time, eat, drink, exchange gifts, and be merry.
Peace,

Actually I celebrate Yule but refer to it as Christmas around people who don't understand paganism.
The festivities of this time of year are about celebrating light and life in the face of darkness; about togetherness, giving, caring, family, community. These are universal human concepts that do not belong to any one religion, or even just to religion. Anyone and everyone has the right to celebrate them.

Because it is really a pagan celebration stolen by the Christians. Why do Christians celebrate a pagan holiday?

Non believers? I happen to be a believer, just not in your God. Early Christians stole a pagan holiday along with all of it's traditions, the tree, the lights, the presents, the greenery in the house and twisted it for their own purposes. By best estimate Jesus was actually born sometime in the spring. MY parents are Christians and I am a Pagan. They celebrate for their God and I celebrate for my Gods. Happy solstice and a merry yule to you and to all of us 'non believers' Hey and Merry Christmas to the atheists too. It has become a secular holiday for most people. No one has to get left out and we all have our own reasons and most of us are happy with that. So sorry that your not.

Because I am Pagan and It was originally my holiday. Why do you celebrate it? Dont say because of Jesus because I can bet you exchange presents and have a big dinner just like me and most people.

I suck it up and go to extended family gatherings, but I don't celebrate within my own home....because I don't believe in any christian or pagan gods....and kids have a ton of stuff anyway, plus the stuff they get from the extended family.

Actually if you research the origins of Christmas and gift giving, it was originally a pagan holiday the church at first tried to banish, but eventually absorbed into their own celebrations. Watch the history channel.

I wonder, to those people who said yes, to they also celebrate Ramadan? Hanukkah? Yom Kippur? Sukkot? Ashura? Buhe?
Its hypocritical. They say somehow that Christmas is secular or not reserved for Christians only, but isn't Hanukkah kinda for Jews only? Ramadan for Muslims only? What makes Christian holidays any different? And don't bother saying, "because Christmas has pagan origins" because that would mean only Christians and pagans can celebrate that day.
