You wont have to worry about the PS3's selling out. You should be able to find a PS3 for Christmas.

Well actually dont worry about losing a ps3 out of stock because they will keep makin it the 80 and 40 gig will be the only ps3 version will be available in the market but it doesnt have backward compatibility this version only support some of ps2 or ps one and the 40 gb doesnt support at all if i where you i will look for the version of ps3 60gb that version rock it have a full backwards compatibility for all ps2 and ps will work on this version and also 20 gb but they stop working on this version my suggestion to you is look for this version if you were lucky enough that will be great but if you dont have ps2 and ps1 games better to buy 80 gb that will be ok and enough hope this will help you

Don't be worried, playstation 3's are everywhere, I always go to walmart where my mom works and I always see a whole bunch, and bestbuy and future shop have quite a lot too. It's only on high demand in japan, its already outselling the 360 and wii.
