Any unexplained weight loss should be checked out by a vet. Diabetes and hyperthyroidism are very common in older cats (is she eating more than normal, but still loosing weight, is she drinking and peeing more?). These conditions are treatable. There are also worse conditions like cancers, felv and FIV.

By the way don't use scissors to cut mats out. They can get very close to the skin and I have seen many many cases where owners who didn't know any better and thought they were being careful, cut the cats skin pretty badly.

Yes, any weight loss should be checked out. Another very common, treatable if you catch it early, disease in older cats is kidney failure. It often presents as failure to groom self bc they don't feel good and there is a funny taste in the mouth. It's not real hard for a vet to diagnose.

At 14 yrs of age, she's "just right" for getting diabetes! Ask your vet to give her a blood test, called a "Fructosamine" test! This will check the glucose (sugar) levels in her blood. If they're too high (diabetes), it can be controlled w/insulin. Losing weight, even though a cat is eating, is a sign of diabetes. Also, if she's not feeling well, she won't take care of herself. SHE IS SICK!!! Be a responsible "parent", and take her to the vet ASAP. Hope this helps.....Good luck.........

I agree with "old cat lady" & Mary J.'s answers.
When a senior cat has those symptoms and is appearing thrifty and unkempt, then those conditions are probably present.
Take to vet for confirmation.

It probably due to insufficient kidney function or a thyroid hormone imbalance, possibly diabetes.

It is very important that a vet do a blood panel to evaluate the status of her health. Many conditions that develop in senior cats are treatable with medication so it is important you have your cat checked out.
