Go to the library and get a basic genealogy book and read about how to conduct research.
Start by getting as much family info about grandparents, etc. from your parents or other relatives. Write all of it down. Then you will need to verify much of it.

I assume that they are not now living? If that is true, then your first step are the death records.
http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
this is the social security death index. I found 2 Edward Metcalfs, who had social security card ISSUED IN Tenn.. one died in NC, the other didn't specify where he died. If they died in the last 50 yrs, both should be in this file, which allows you to confirm the dates (just in case).
The ONE thing I emphasize is to keep each person in your mind as an individual.. not a tree.. and as you go, learn the different records used. From their death certificates, you should be able to confirm the name(s) of their parents, and where they were born.
Those born before 1930, can be found in census records. This is taken every 10 yrs and contains different types of info. Between 1880-1930, each person shows their place of birth, as well as where their parents were born. Sometimes you will find the parents living with married children.
NO one's memory is perfect.. that is the reason we rely on documents/ records. And, you want more than one, when you can.. even records can have mistakes.
Taking it one step at a time, keeps from overwhelming.
And you can keep coming back here, as you go. Each new thing you use, teaches you something.
edit- many people prefer a book. There are many guides online, also.

If your parents are still living, ask questions! Tape record answers, other relatives are also very helpful. Do not take everything with a grain of salt, but even the old stories contain a grain of truth.
Go to "Cindy's List" on the web. She has umpteen sites you can browse and all are helpful!
Good hunting, it's a time consuming hobby but I've been doing it for over 40 years and never cease to become excited when I make a connection!

First of all, it is Knoxville, Tennessee.
What was your mother's first name, birthdate, etc? Makes it hard to look up otherwise. Also, was your father from Tennessee as well??
