If you were to take a photograph of a white, sandy beach, midday sun and wanted to get good exposure, would you get the same effect with using a gray card as you would by upping the exposure a click or two? Do these two techniques work the same way? Why or why not? Thanks!!!

Cards are good for giving the 18% reading, you can use that to get "the right" exposure or you can use them then play with the exposure knowing what your doing and what effect it will have.

On a sunny day or overcast day you can fairly much do a card reading then decide what you want to do with that info. When the light changes like Jeff said then you have to be more aware. I do exposure pushs or pulls as the light changes. I can feel it and see it. I do hand readings of my palm and use that info, it's the same as the card method but I just add 1 stop to make it a 18% reading.

So when in doubt use the card.

The reading off the sand will be 2-3 stops out*, the card will be perfect. I would use the card myself.

* There is sand and sand, some is white some is white and highly reflective they can be quite different, the card is always constant, use it and garentee your results. Watch out for changing light like clouds and so forth. Take a new reading every 10 minutes or so and you won't go wrong.

Meter off the white sand or the gray card and then try 1 @ +1EV and 1 @ +2EV - unless you want gray sand.

The same applies to pure white snow.
