Yes, a .22 can kill a deer if it is shot in the head. The problem is that a .22 is not all that reliable and will result in far more injuries and slow deaths that it will in kills. Never use a .22 to hunt deer. It is unethical, immoral and very illegal.

Well, the question is CAN it kill a deer, and the answer is absolutely YES. Now that being said, should a .22 ever be used to kill a deer? Absolutely NO!!!!! In fact, many states, GA, FLA, AL for sure specifically exclude either rim fire ammunition and/or rounds of .22 caliber or less to be used for taking deer.

If a deer was shot in the top of the neck, or in the brain area with a .22 it could bring it down relatively quickly, but it might also be a long slow lingering death. If the deer was shot in the vital heart/lung areas, the .22 would likely kill it too, but it would again be a long lingering painful death. That deer may run for miles/days before finally expiring.

If you take on the responsibility of hunting and taking an animals life, then you have a responsibility to take that life humanely. A .22 is just not the proper way to do it. There is a good chance that you would just wound/maim the animal make its last few days torturous.

The answer to your question is
YES, a .22 long rifle bullet can kill a deer.
It is doubtful if you could bring down a deer in an expedient period of time, if you didn't get a good head shot & then, it would be your best chance of success, if the deer was within 25 yards, anything other than a solid head shot, would more than likely, just wound the animal & it would run off & maybe die later. even if it didn't die, it would suffer a lot, which is not the intention of a good hunter.
most states do not allow deer hunting with a rim fire weapon.
be a good hunter, use something that will bring the deer down quickly.

Good luck & good hunting

YES a .22 lr can and DOES kill deer every year......it is the FAVORITE round for poachers........tho in general they are at least smart enough to use a spotlight and shoot the deer behind the ear at night.......and while this is UNETHICAL and HIGHLY ILLEGAL.........it is MORE ethical and makes more sense than what ur talking about doing.... ** and NO 15 rounds of .22lr in general will NOT kill a deer from body shots........i mean yes deer will probably go somewhere and die....but NO u will not be able to harvest it and it will be much further than 500 yards.............. ** i say this since ur too dam lazy to hunt ethically i know ur sure as hell to dam lazy to bother to track a wounded deer..... ** btw HUNTING is NOT target practice.......the deer do NOT turn broadside and let u shoot them for 5 seconds.........u MIGHT be able to hit the deer twice before it will be out of sight (dumping all 15 rounds)....and more than likely that 2nd shot will be nowhere near any vital area.........

You can kill anything with about anything if you set it up and are lucky.

An elephant was once even killed with a 22. I beleive it snicked in between the ribs and hit a lung, and they then followed it around for ages until it died, probably from infection going by the time frame.

The point is at some stage it it becomes 'stunt' rather than a 'useful and repeatable hunting method'

Shooting deer with a 22 is getting into in stunt territory for most people, unless you are harvesting them in a pen at close range.

I have no way to know if your friend did it or not, but it CAN be done. However, the skill to get close enough to a deer to humanely kill it with a .22 is something that very few hunters have. One would have to hit it in just the right spot, or it would escape to die a lingering death. Not to mention the fact that hunting deer with a .22 is ILLEGAL in all states, as far as I know.

Not legally. In no state is it legal to hunt deer with a .22 LR firearm.

However, it is quite common for jacklighters to use .22's to illegally poach deer at night. Not because of the power, but because they have little report to alert game wardens of their activity.

I once killed a doe with a single shot from a .22 Short derringer. The range was about 6-inches. She'd been severely wounded with a load of buckshot. My derringer was the only handgun in the group, so I put my foot on her neck, stuck the derringer near her ear and shot her. She died immediately.

A .22 LR can kill a deer. My grandfather hunted deer with a long rifle for 20 years because it was all that he had. Later on he got a .308 (which he passed down to me) and a .30-06 (which he passed down to my brother). But he's killed deer with it. However, you MUST hit it in the head, and it MUST be at a fairly close range. However, I doubt your friend did it...it isn't an easy thing to do.

Good grief, i've had trouble finishing off a groundhog with a .22 LR, haha.

YES, but you have to be close and shoot it between the eyes if facing you or in the ear canal if broadside.

I know several people you have shot deer while squirrel hunting or racoon hunting at night with a 22. It is illegal and a couple of them lost their hunting rights for doing so.

A 22 long rifle does not have the energy for a clean kill with a chest shot but at close range it can penetrate the skull. I have also heard of poachers using 22 magnums for head shots at night using a ATV or lawnmower battery and a spot light.

My grandfather used to kill cattle and hogs to take to the butcher at point blank range with a 22 long rifle. However a couple of times it took a 22 magnum for a large hog.

As to all the people who says it is illegal in all states to shoot a deer with a .22 , they are wrong. In Wisconsin you can shoot deer with a .22 as long as it is a center-fire rifle, not a rim-fire. I use a 30-06 which drops the deer in its tracks about 90% of the time.
