I think children should have an experience with "school" much earlier than 5. A few hours a day by age 3 gives them the chance to learn important social skills and also prepares them for other forms of authority beyond Mommy and Daddy.
As for when to start public kindergarten: I was forced to wait a year because my birthday is 11/29. By the time I got to school, I already knew most of the curriculum and was bored, which led to hours in time-out for distracting other kids. Some children are more mature at 4 than others at 6 - seems like there should be some other standard besides month of birth. Unfortunately, our public school system is a sad sad thing so, if you can't afford private education, you just have to deal with what someone else thinks is best for your kid.

in cali the cut off date is dec 9th. i was ready for kinder when i started and i as 4. (nov 17 bday) pretty much the statistics are 2 out of every 5 kids in kinder are not ready to learn. i think they should make it 6 years by dec 9th. they're more mature and can probly absorb a lot more. i work at a school mainly with k-3rd grade and there are alot of kids that started at 4 and are at the top and their are kids that where 5 and where in pre school and where totally not all there. i think they should do an assesment on kids over the summer to see if they really are ready or not

I live in Connecticut
If you child birthday is after the first day of school, sometimes August, sometimes September, until Dec 31, you have the choice to start school what every year you want
I would wait if I had a choice
I have a March child
I think Connecticut is right to give the parents the choice
It's about 60/40 in waiting with a late birthday
I know parents that did both
No one that wait every regret it
I do know people who child start at 4, turning 5, and regret it
Not all

I think it really depends on the child, not the age really. My oldest started at 5 and did great. My youngest started at 6 and I feel it was perfect for her. She missed the cut off the year before by 2 weeks, and I was mad at first because I felt they should have let her in. But I put her in preschool and after a little while it finally hit me, that she was in the perfect place for her. She matured a little more in that year and its great. So, yea, I think it depends on the child. I personally started kindergarten at 4 and did fine, where as there is a 4 year old in my daughters class this year and he acts very immature, even the teacher has commented on it to the mother that maybe he should have waited another year.

Most children are ready for school at age 5.
But it really depends on the emotional and intellectual maturity of the child.
There are some children who are intellectually ready at 3 or 4 but wouldn't be able to keep up physically or emotionally with the other children. There are some children who still aren't ready at 5 and have to be held back one more year.
I was raised in Virginia, when I was in school, the cut off date was November 30 but later dropped back to Oct 1. It wasn't a hard and fast rule, if a child who was born after the cut off date tested as ready for school then they would allow the child to enter.

here in md the cut off is august 31, or up to 45 days after if the child is ready for kindergarden. My daughter has been ready since last yr but just turned 5 nov 18 so she has to wait until next august to start when she's almost 6 yrs old. I think it's stupid. I dont think there should be a cut off point like that.

it's 5 by Sept 1st in Wisconsin, your kids can test in if their birthdays are after then.
My nephew turned 5 on sept 2nd (not this year, he's 15 now), and he went to kindergarten the year he turned 5 and he only made it like 3 months and they basically kicked him out because he was a little behind, and it seems like the schools are very quick to put the younger children aside and then saying that they are too young and that's why they are behind. He is now one of the oldest in his class, but he also ahead of most his class too.

In Ohio it's 5 by August 1st. Because of that, both my boys started school older than their peers. One was 5-1/2 (December bday) and the other was 6 (August 16th bday). I think boys need the time more than girls, but I think 8's ridiculous.

I think it depends on the child. I started Kindergarten when I was 4, and turned 5 a couple months later. I graduated high school, and started college, when I was 17. If your child shows maturity and aptitude for starting school, then go for it. If for any reason you don't think they're ready, then there is no harm in waiting a year.
