Open the fuse box door and see the gray plug OBD-1 the white plug that looks like OBD2 under the dash might only read ABS and trans codes. Depending on the actual date of production. Self Diagnosis is available on most 1996 pathfinders by turning a screwdriver slot on the side of the ECM and watching the two LED lights flash RED and Green. Get a decent manual that details the 5 modes of diagnostic and turn the slot gently. Mode 3 is where the Codes read out.

Check the gas cap to make sure it is good and sealing as it should. He could have put faulty cap on. You will get this code at times if you leave the gas cap loose. So if cap not sealing would also give you code. Also remove positive battery cable from battery for 2 minutes. You will have to reset your radio etc. but this might clear code. It is also possible you have been overfilling your fuel tank. If all of the above does not work check to make sure all valves and canisters are truly new. If so you may have faulty sensor that brings in alarm...

All cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be OBD II equipped. In general, this means all 1996 model year cars and light trucks are compliant, even if built in late 1995.
