why is it that a LOT of people with different beliefs have a lack of respect for each other??

so what if someone doesn't follow the same religion, or doesn't choose to live the same lifestyles as you... does that honestly give you the right to judge and bash people, to shove your beliefs down their throats?

i'm not saying that everyone does it. i'm not directing this to any religion or specific people in general... i'm directing this to everyone, whether you've done it before or witnessed it. i'm not asking this as a christian, athiest, protestant, muslim or any other religion... i'm asking this as a PERSON.

That's a big problem in today's world - lack of respect and understanding. It is caused (IMO) by fear - fear of the unknown or being wrong, and ignorance.

It costs you nothing to be respectful, to be humble, to speak the truth to the best of your ability, to lift others instead of putting them down.

It is the story of the cat and the dog. The dog wags its tail because it wants to make friends and play. The cat wags its tail because it sees the wagging tail as a sign of imminent attack.

Believers try to find protection for their beliefs : they demand and, when politically opportune, impose respect.
Truthseekers like to investigate, try, test and analyze ideas, especially when these ask for respect and show no proof.
They think: why should we respect an idea before we have tested it? Does it bring any progress? Will it heal cancer and aids? What has it brought us in the past?
When the idea or this respect-demanding idea does not answer the expectations it has set out, they will discard it, because in their eyes ideas are instruments, not goals.

Secondly: when truthseekers start investigating beliefs, believers feel insulted because they do not see the clear line between their selves and their beliefs. For truthseekers this line is as massive as the Great Wall.

Is there any proof that god is not laughing her head off with all the insults and jokes? Or do religions want respect so people wont see through them?

Have a nice day.

I don't respect people who don't think for themselves. Answering me in Bible verses obviously is not an answer. The Bible means less to me than Harry Potter, they are both fictional, and Harry Potter was a much more thrilling read.

It also shows me that the answerer cannot think for themselves, the rely on ancient authors of a nonsensical book. I don't respect that at all.

If you can come up with original thoughts, no matter how far away from mine they are, I'll respect you. There is a lot of ignorance in this section, and I don't respect that. I'm sorry if that offends you, I really am.

People are afraid of what they don't understand. They are taught all their lives that everything has to be one way or the other. They cannot get their minds around the idea that different things are right for different people. They are especially afraid that someone else might be right.
My dad shared with me the questions he had as a young adult about Catholicism and one of his questions was what if they are wrong? He is a solid church going Catholic now and though he accepts that I am not, he often asks me why I don't go to church. When I ask him why I should, he says, "because what if they are right?" This is his only argument for me going back to Catholicism.

I always respect the rights of others to follow any religion they like...and I expect the same in return. This is an open forum and everyone also has the right to freedom to speak their opinion, and I do...but I'd never tell anyone that my way is the only way to spiritual progression or that something terrible will happen to them if they don't convert to the religion I embrace.

Actually, many of the most populous religions today tell their followers to go out and profess their faith and to try and convert others. At least now they mostly do it through verbal bashing and judging others instead of torture and murder.
Personally, I'll stay a bona fide pagan. I don't try to convert, I judge others on how they act and I fully believe each person is entitled to live their own lives however they see fit, so long as they don't try to keep others from living their lives.

Religions at least the three big ones try to convert everyone to their belief. Atheists try and tell the truth about myths.

With all that going on its impossible to have respect. Everyone thinks they are right or have the right belief.

We should respect the fact that we are humans and having said that we should respect humanity for what it is and drop the religious beliefs.

India comes to mind. That nation has more "gods" than they have developed towns or cities. In 1983 I saw on the national news (ABC) film footage of violence that broke out between Sikhs and muslims, and there on the screen, for all the world to watch in all of its gruesomeness, was a Sikh Indian who just moments before the camera began taping, had been thoroughly doused with gasoline and set ablaze.
All of this carnage and murder because of competing religious factions in a country that is extremely religiously volatile and ready to erupt at the drop of a pin over religious differences.

Just imagine what a wonderful paradise the world would be without people? From the beginning they sinned. There sin wasn't to eat of the tree of good and evil. There sin was not to believe God. Unbelief still reigns today and sin struggles to smother out the truth. No. People will never get along with each other or respect each other or love each other...until God intervenes.

I believe it is lack of knowledge and insecurities within a person who is lacking in something and fulfills this emptiness by making others hurt like him/her.

I have met some very peaceful......... I mean truly peaceful people who are very knowledged in their religion. They are usually very soft spoken and live a down to earth life without being arrogant!
