Oh my gosh I was laid off 6 months ago and I just found out that my unemployment has run out. I also found out that my husband hasn't paid our IRS taxes since 2005 and we owe $30k. If I get a job the IRS will probably take my entire check forever. This is a nightmare. Why does the IRS go after the poor wife with no job and no income coming in and take $245.00 out of my checking without a warning? This Xmas is going to really blow.

The IRS will levy any assets you have, that includes checking and savings accounts, however, they do notify you before they do it. They send many, many letters and certified letters before they do this and obviously you haven't been reading the mail. Perhaps your husband gets the mail and just didn't tell you about it. Once they start doing these things, you must hire a tax attorney to help you. Do not try to deal with them by yourself. You can ask for an installment payment plan from the IRS, but you cannot ignore their requests for payment. If you do you are asking for lots more trouble from them. If they are now seizing your assets, your home could be next. Please hire a tax attorney now.

As someone else said... Don't blame the IRS. I do not mean to be harsh but 2 things...

Christmas only will suck because you have fallen for the corporate brainwashing of having to have SO MUCH. Big deal if there are few or no gifts. Jesus got nothing when he was born. The Magi did not arrive until he was about 1 year old.

Do not blame the IRS. Your husband refused to pay his/your taxes. I paid my taxes in full every year since I have had to file. Why should yall be left off the hook. You dont owe the IRS... You owe the American Public. That money is all our money. You are not paying the IRS, you are paying the postal system, interstate system, teachers, national parks, grandma and grandpas dentures and medical care, tuition for medical students, the handguns US Marshalls use when the arrest dangerous fellons, the waterbottles soldiers use in the deserts of Iraq and the gas in coast gaurd helicopters when they do rescues. DO NOT BLAME THE IRS. BLAME YOUR HUSBAND AND HIS GREED AND DISBELIEF IN OR HASTE OF PAYING YOUR FARESHARE IN THIS SOCIETY.

I dont like paying taxes. But, I would rather contribute than scam the system. All tax cheats, late filers and people who do not plan on making payments are worse than ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. YOUR FREEDOM IS NOT FREE.

What is it with the folks who like to toss out "Injured Spouse" and "Innocent Spouse." Do you folks ever look at the form to see who they apply to?

To the poster, I take it this is your current husband you and live together and have no intention of getting divorced. I take it he is self-employed and was supposed to make quarterly estimated taxes to the IRS, but never did. Consequently, those years you filed a joint return now have a balance due of $30K and they have not only his SSN, but your SSN as well since the debt belongs to both of you.

Despite the fact the IRS has asked the two of you to make payment plans, but the two of you have failed to do so. The IRS has had to resort on the only income they know about--YOUR job. The IRS *did* give you warning. Did you even read any of the letters they sent???

IRS does not levy on anything without warning except is very unusual cases and yours isn't one of them. It will have sent at least five balance due notices for each year--with at least one for each year being addressed to you individually--before serving a levy on a bank account. Unless you communicate with IRS or any other creditor, they don't know what the situation is and presume you are just sticking your head in the sand.

First of all if you were not married at the time your husband filed these returns you can file for injured spouse Form 8379. Visit IRS website: www.irs.gov for more information, but IRS will work with your husband and any joint returns with refunds will be offset to any balance owed, Have you husband call IRS at 1-800-829-8374 to set up an installment agreement.
when you marry someone you marry their debt.

Its not the IRS' fault; its your husband's fault. Not to depress you further, but I hope you're aware that unemployment benefits are taxable. You will get a 1099 from your state employment division.
