if a dog barks alot and you yell no at them every time, they quit for that time but then something else exciting happens and they start all over again. this goes on for years. What else can you do?

this isn't actually my dog I'm just making up things that you would have to fix as a dog trainer and the owners have been just yelling no at them.

You could try when your walking along the street with him whenever he barks squirt some water out of a squirt gun or a garden plant water squirter thingamajig. You should buy your dog this special collar that has this tiny 3mm by 6 mm nozzle that squirts out water when it detects your dog barking. It's a great product. I used it for my dog and he doesn't bark anymore. Also when you leave him at home spend your last few minutes calmly eg. reading a book, lying down on the couch and ignore him then leave so it's not such a big deal when you leave the house. Also try walking to the door and back again. Do this for however long it takes for your dog to calm down and walk away because he knows your to busy and boring to play right now. Those last twp methods will maybe help with anxiety of you going away and less barking. Hope this helps you!

I have 2 German Shepherds that are outside dogs 24/7. I taught my dogs the command HUSH and they will quit barking. Another thing that I myself do to my dogs is knock on the window and tell them HUSH. They have learned this from the time that they are very young puppies. My dogs are 8 ( female) and 5 (male).
Hope this is of some help.
By the way this worked for the neighbor dog too. He heard me correcting my dogs and caught on to their behavior.

My dog was horrible at barking. He barked for attention. Even if i took him out to play, he always wanted more. So of course being frustrated I yelled at him. But yelling gave hime the attention he desired. Then I got really good at ignoring him. As soon as he started barking I immediatley turned my back to him and went into another room. This helped a little but eventually didn't work at all anymore. We also tried spray bottles and shaking a can of chain. These things worked for like a day, then he got used to them. As my last resort I bought the gental spray citronella collar (last resort cuz it costs about 100$ at a pet store, you can find them cheaper elsewhere online , but I didn't want to wait). This worked for him. It worked really well. However I was told by the vet that it doesn't work for every dog. So you may want to purchase one from a place that will let you return it.

Either try the lemon juice trick, which is when it begins barking, quietly walk over to them and squirt lemon juice in their mouth and say "no" or "quiet" in a conversational tone or use a muzzle until they get out of the habit of barking and realize there are better ways to get your attention, contrary to popular belief it isn't inhumane.

it depends on the breed
if the dog hates water, squirt it with a squirt gun
what works for mine is a "time out". she hates not knowing everything that's going on, so i make her lay down and put her head down for about 3 minutes.
or, you can get a barking collar.
some vets will even "de-bark" a dog. in other words, surgically remove the vocal cords or do something so they don't work anymore. but i think that's extreme, and inhumane.

other than yelling, you could still give them more exercise... make them dogs feel exhausted so that they'll be soooo tired they'll stop barking. a nice walk to the park might be a good start or try hiring a "dog-sitter". you'll have your peace and quiet time after that and so is the dog...
hope this helps.

Wow.. Yelling at a dog will never make it stop barking.. You might as well cheer him on.. Why don't you get a bark collar to teach him to stop barking if you can't correct the behaviour and stop the barking otherwise.. To allow something to go on and on for years.. Well that's pretty silly.

By yelling at him you are actually giving him extra attention which in a way is like rewarding the behavior. The lemon juice method sounds like a good method although i have never tried it myself.

quietly walk up to te dog, open his mouth, squirt some lemon juice, say quiet, and walk away. It only takes about 3 times for your dog to get what quiet means.
