It was just a prototype. Sony decided to get rid of it because it wasn't catching on with the gamers. Most people thought it was really stupid looking, so Sony went back to the Dual Shockk controllers.

Well the simple matter is the expense. When they were making the ps3 they had this deadline in budget planned out, but they went over their deadline and way over budget. When selling the ps3 they were going to have to jack the price up to make a profit, but instead they improvised. The controller was too much. They had to make a cut somewhere to have a decent selling price.

On the official public introduction Ken Kutaragi (PS "father") presented a silver PS3 with a boomerang joustick. After that internet was full of angry gamers who said, that this shape is ridiculous. After that, couple of months later, Kutaragi presented a SIXAXIS controller, which we have now.
