A seemingly stupid question, I agree, but tell me in your own words what you think or believe "sin" to be.

Sin is trespassing against God's will for mankind. God did not want robots to obey him so he gave us free will. It wouldn't be free will if we couldn't disobey. Mankind has taken full advantage of that free will to disobey beyond even normal sin. All we like sheep have gone astray, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. God demonstrates his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. As many as receive him, to them he gives the authority to become children of God, even to them who believe on his name. Those who believe in Jesus as their refuge, trust, and savior do not face God in their own sins. Those who refuse Jesus, must face God in their own sins. So with our free will we refuse to obey God, then we compound this wrong by refusing his remedy for our sins. There is no remedy more. It is trusting Jesus, or paying for our own sins.

Actually, it is a VERY good question.

Sin is transgression of the law. In other words, when you break the Law of Moses, you have sinned.

Romans 4:15 (NKJV) ... the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

Romans 5:13 (NKJV) (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

1 John 3:4 (KJV) Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

EDIT: The Law is very specific, thus, sin is certainly not a relative concept. And yes, the Law does even cover the sins of ommission, like for example, if you see your neighbour's donkey in a ditch then the law requires that you help it to get free...

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Law is a legal issue. If we break the law then we are condemned for doing so. This is why the Christians put their hope in Jesus as the One who paid their penalty for sinning because without Him they have no hope.

Hope that helps,

God bless you!

Sin comes in many forms. There are black and white sins like murder and adultery. But then there is sin that can be a Gray area as well. In these Gray areas sin for one man man not be sin for another. Not doing what God tells you to do is disobedience to one man but may be a sin to another. Take anger. Anger can be a sin but then there is justifiable anger. Christ got angry with the moneychangers in the temple. Was it sin. No. If you get angry at your child and lash out is it sin Yes. I can tell you that Sin is from Satan and with Christ we can overcome and turn away from it.
Merry Christmas to all.

Doing contrary to Gods commandments. That is sin, We humans cannot set our own moral standards of right and wrong because we are not capable of following our own laws. That is obvious, we are not Holy and perfect like Jesus. The devil is to strong for us, he will eventually cause us to break our own laws as we do every day. Fortunately for us Jesus came and died on that cross and provided us away to get to Heaven if we believe in him. Praise the Lord!!!

It's a religious concept which in this case is a relative judgment. That which constitutes "Sin" is relative to the individual's judgment. "Sin" has no ontological status and therefore doesn't have any concrete existence apart from its existence as a concept.
