The human tongue.
"And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Therefore bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God."
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be." (James 3:6-10 KJV)

Human beings are considered to be the most prolific builders as well as the most destructive destroyers.
Human history reveals a pattern of destruction, not only of others, but of himself as well. He is no different than the other but he thinks he is, he believes he is different; he is right; his god is the only true god, his son or daughter is more important than my son and daughter and that he is more deserving.
Just imagine the English soldiers living in rat infested flooded trenches, starving to death, freezing, boots rotting off as well as toes and feet and on the other side of the field German soldiers living in similar conditions. Each believing he is an Englishman and the other thinking he is a German.
Each one has an image of himself. Each one is living with similar mental patterns and behaves similarly, unaware that he is the same as the other inside the skin. Each one is programmed, conditioned by his own mind, desperate to fit in, totally compromised, lonely, frightened, insecure. His beliefs about himself, his image of himself, and all that he does, does not give him freedom, inwardly or outwardly.
He remains a prisoner of his own making. He kills and is killed. He remains full of sorrow.
Because he does not face himself, look at himself, learn about himself, he cannot see himself as he actually is and so he remains ignorant and does not change. When he does manage to wake up a bit and look at himself he cannot look except with his preconceived ideas, images and beliefs and so he cannot see what he has become and so he remains unaware and being unaware of himself inwardly, deeply, he repeats the same old pattern of building and destroying, wanting peace but incapable of bringing it about.
Each person, man and woman, will continue to repeat this pattern unless and until each one of us becomes curious, interested enough to begin looking at him or her self, without criticism, without analyzing, just looking at how we already are, what we have become, how our brain works, seeing what thinking is, how it works, seeing what is behind our thinking, seeing the motives, the hate, the envy, the pursuits, the greed, until we see ourselves exactly as we are, not what we want to be, we will remain ignorant and will continue to repeat the same old pattern.
Observing how the brain works, how thought operates, how thinking is attached to the preconceived ideas, beliefs, false values, the motives behind our thinking and feeling, urges and actions, and as a result see exactly what we have become, both inwardly and outwardly, each one seeing how his/her brain operates, what he is feeling, what is driving his actions and also see and learn very clearly what are the limits of thought.......................... then he is already free, free to look, free to learn, free to be totally aware.
From that inward freedom will come a new mind.
Self knowledge is the beginning of wisdom
