A .45 hollow point will kill a deer.
A 9mm might kill a deer but I wouldn't count on it. A 9mm is only about .38 caliber...just too light to bring down a deer.
Using hollow points in a S&W 40 will bring down a deer.

The most reliable are the large calibers. Smaller calibers will do the job but they have to be high-powered rifle rounds with high velocity and softnosed ammunition.

First of all, a .22 can kill a dear if it hits them in the right (or wrong, if you're the deer) spot, but I WOULD NOT hunt deer with a .22 because it would be just plain irresponsible. As far as the .45 ACP, .40 S&W, and 9mm parabellum, they are listed in order for decreasing impact energy. I feel that the 9mm is a worthless round personally. If you shoot somebody with a 9mm and they find out, they're going to be very mad. The .40 S&W is a far better choice (still not a deer round), but the .45 ACP round shot from a lever-action carbine IS a respectable deer round. It is also the only readily-available choice for a potent self-defense round. It still has the highest "one-shot-stop" record as compiled by the FBI for all police officer-involved shootings ever.

Those are defensive, not hunting, handguns. If you want something for deer, try a revolver in 41 or 44 magnum. "Spray and pray" is a losing proposition in a gunfight but at least might make your opponent duck. In hunting, you want your first shot to be it, and that one needs to be slightly more powerful than either 40 S&W or 45 ACP can deliver. Also, autoloaders generally won't load a bullet with the wide, flat meplat you want for medium game. Though it's a common error to try to relate combat to hunting, the two have considerably different requirements.

Here is a good ballistic site. Gives you information on all the popular calibers available. Any caliber from a .22 up will kill a deer.

Any of them can kill a deer, but they are much less than ideal.

Hunting handguns generally start with guns as powerful as the 44 rem mag, which have at least some rifle like penetration properties and useful range.

Those you mention are typical of defence handguns in that they are running at only 800-1100fps or so, with very short bullets for calibre.
Good for flattening upright animals only 10" thick through the body. Not so good for animals on four legs up to several feet thick through the body that can run a mile before they die.

I suggest you purchase the latest edition of Cartridges of the World.

Whether you know it or not, there are many hundreds of different cartridges ranging from 2.2 mm Kolibri to .700 Nitro Express, and that doesn't even include the different shotgun gauges.

It would be impossible to list all of them in a Yahoo Answers response, even if one were willing to do all the typing.

BTW, yes, a .45 Long Colt, not a .45 ACP, can kill deer with the greatest of ease.
