He applied for and received a commission in the Naval Reserve. He left in 1945 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, having served the bulk of his time in the South Pacific during World War Two.
He was one of five Presidents in a row who had held commissions in the Navy (Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Carter).
