i guess the plant grows toward the light because the plant's leaves need to absorb the sunlight to create food (clorophyll)
so the sun is the stimuli and the response is it produces food and survives? I honestly have no idea? its just a guess

light = stimuli
response = growth
the plant is growing towards something, the sun is "stimulating" the plant to grow (response). THe plants response to the light is growth.
