Extremist protestants started taking that attitude around the early to mid 19th century,so it is conparatively recent and largely limited to the U.S. and even here mostly confined to poorly-educated whites, they being the primary body of so-called born-againism.

I am not Catholic, but I work in an profession where I am around Catholics all day. I think people say that because sometimes Catholics don't show their faith outwardly. I sometimes wonder how deep their faith is, then sometimes I see a glimpse of it.

Not that they are bad, they just don't share. Their faith seems to be more personal and not discussed. Also, they do things like drink outwardly, which a lot of Protestants do secretly. They also can be very worldly, but then very much in love with the religion.

Another thing, I have to tell the Catholic students to remember that Mary and Jesus are not just a symbol in their yard or on their neck, but a real person that wants a relationship everyday.

Maybe that would help...I have more to say, but this forum is not the place.

Anyone who substitutes the Pauline gospel of blood for sin... for the Original Kingdom Gospel about "treasure hid in a field" has left behind the real Christianity.

And for most denominations, that switch happened long, long ago. Constantine and his friends probably had a hand in that switch.

I always laugh to myself in a sort of wicked way when I hear people say things like, "Oh, yes! It was a wonderful conference. There were Christians, and Catholics and Mormons altogether worshiping and singing! It was very uplifting!"

History. The crusades, religious wars, the Spanish Inquisition (what happened to love thy neighbor). The establishment of the hierarchy and institution of the Church. The hypocrisy of the leaders of the Church. The abuse of papal power. There are countless examples.

Its a mis-conception based on the virgin de guadeloupe. (sP)

The catholic church had a bad habbit of saintifying Gods and Goddesses of religions they where trying to convert.

"oh look... Odin is really Saint Nicholas...." Odin really is saint nick... Its a long story.... Lets just say the victorians did to much opium.

The Virgin de Guadelouope is one of them. However it was long after the promineant time of these conversions.

The Church made a really stupid.... stupid mistake.

Instead of just making a female saint... (thre virgin was a main goddess and was foundational) They decided they didnt want a female saint and just said "Hey... look...its really the virgin mary...."

The locals never stopped worshipping her. She held her prominence as a mother goddess. Names changed, traditions changed everything but her gender, and what she was changed.

To this day the peoples of central america who are catholic still put an incredible amount of prominence on the figure.

Modern Christians who dont understand saint hood see her as an Idol.

About sainthood. Saints are more like heros. They are people to aspire to be like. They are not worshipped. They are prayed to... SECOND. (well 4th really. It goes God, jesus, Mary/Mosses/the other guy, then patron saint of a person)

The saints are like Gods clerks. They do the paperwork and authorize the minor things of his kingdom so he has time to relax and enjoy himself. Or peep in on the world. Or play a game of catch with his son Jesus.

You pray to the saints for small things. Like a term paper, or a help deciding what pair of shoelaces to buy. You pray to the other guys (like mosses... Although he dosent get a lot from Christians these days) For the more important things like help with a troublesome cituation. You pray to Jesus and God for the really important things. the things that are really urking you or giving you trouble.
