I live in Wisconsin and here there is an organization called WORS Wisconsin Off Road Series (Just google WORS and mountain bike) It will give you an idea about whats involved in entering and what not. They are very help full in providing directions, course descriptions, entry fees and things like that. I'm sure that in whatever state your living in there is a similar organization. As far as training and gear maybe check out the websites for the various magazines and look for related links. I hope this helps,

Depends where you live and the sort of events that you want to do. If UK to might want to try joining MTQ for trail quests. They also do a Friday night series of races around different parts of the midlands.

You might also try your local bike shop, since they will know many of the club/competition riders.

Here in MI it's the MMBA - Michigan mountain biking association. Google mountain bike and your state, you should find one. Another way, call a couple bike shops around you..
BTW MMBA is NORBA affiliated too.
