How much do you want to spend?
I own two Rock Island Armory 1911s. The tactical model and compact model
Both after shipping and FFL were just a little over $400. $445 for the tactical and $424 for the compact.
I have shot close to or a little over 1000 rounds between the two pistols and I couldn't be any happier with them.
For a good entry level 1911, I'd say go RIA or Taurus. But if you're feeling saucy, you can get the Springfield too.
I was going to get a Taurus 1911, which I still might, but once I joined the m1911.org forums and got info about the RIAs, I was very pleased that I chose RIA. Their service is the best in the 1911 market. If you're curious about the RIAs/Armscor 1911s swing by www.m1911.org and take a look in the Armscor forums. Plenty of owners there that are very helpful and knowledeable when it comes to the RIA 1911.
You can actually talk to the service reps for RIA as well. If you have any probs, they can help you without hesitation. Their names are Ray, Ivan and Arnel. Their company is in Pahrump, Nevada. www.advancedtactical.com.
If you want some visual help, I have several vids on the Rock Island 1911s that I own on youtube. Just enter Rock Island Armory 1911 and my vids will come up. My name there is UrbanTiger74. Feel free to drop me a message there or in the forums. Good luck!!!

Depends on a few things
1 - what do you consider affordable. (some would consider a 2000+ dollar Night Hawk Custom a Bargain at 1700... and affordable)
2 - What are you looking for in the weapon
While I agree that hte Gi models are affordable, the sights on them are.. well... GI sights and (for me) not that useable for the types of shooting that I do... so you mat need to change them (figure 100 or so)... The trigger is a little too heavy... so may need to be lightened a little...
By the time you change the sights and work on the trigger (assuming that you are not doing the work) you might be able to find a used Springfield (not GI) Colt, Kimber for 5-700.
Not knocking the GI... just know what you are getting with the model, and what you get with a higher priced model (even in the same manufacurer.
I have a few 1911's, all Kimber, and bought most of them used
1 - Ultra carry II - USED - 500.00 changed springs and Magazines - Flawless and is Daily Carry
2 - Clackmas - USED - 599.00 Series 1 (pre series 2 anyway) - Flawless Operationoperation3
3 - TLE II - NEW - 800 (or so) - Flawless operation

I would have to recomend the Springfield Armory 1911's as a good pistol to buy. I bought a GI model for around $475 then sold it to a friend (for $400) so I could buy a fancier one for $650. The prices may be different where you are at but you cant go wrong with the Springfield. So far all the GI Springfields I found have been around the $500 range lately.

this depends on what you want on your 1911. The more options you add the more it cost. If you want a plan gane 1911 45 get the Springfield GI model I think they go for about $500. It is your basic jsut as teh WWII gi got them. Next up I would go with a Kimber Custom II it has some bells and whistles but is not overly priced. After that I would go with a wilson combat.

Traditional affordable 1911 pistols : RIA, High Standard (both Philipino and metric), Springfield GI model, Kahr-Thompson 1911
Factory custom: RIA tactical model, Taurus PT1911, KImber Custom II (base model, I have one and love it)
The traditional models listed range from $350-$500 and the factory customs listed run from over $500-$700.

There were some people who mentioned above that Taurus makes a nice firearm. let me give you my two cents on the matter :
Taurus has never and will never make a nice semi automatic pistol. the 1911's they make can hardly be called a 1911.
If you want quality craftmanship and a gun that will last you untill your great granchildrens great grandchildren are dead, you are going to be spending some money. there is one exception to this rule, that i have found out, and that is the Springfield Armory 1911A1 models. they have a few less expensive ( not cheap, by all means ) and beatiful guns that should definately be looked at before purchasing anything that you are going to regret later.
hope this helps

If you can afford $650-$700 you can get a Kibmber Custom II that will outshoot most 1911's costing thousands.
If you just want a gun that goes "bang" then look at Rock Island and Taurus.
