OK, then why does the bible say that at judgment some will say "Lord, Lord" and He will say He never knew them. Is it because they did no works or because they did? Does this indicate there is no merit to works? What will we be judged on then if not our works? What about the Bible saying for us to put our treasures in heaven. What does this mean?

No, instead he said this about our deeds: "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS. Matthew 16:27
It doesn't get any clearer than that.

"All our works are but filthy rags unto the Lord".
Here's how the Bible lays it out. We don't do good works to get saved,"for it is by grace through faith that we are saved and not by works,it is a gift from God,least anyman boast".You can't work for a gift otherwise it isn't a gift it is a wage.
We do good works because we are saved not to get saved.Works are the fruit that grows on a good tree.
Jesus said "All that come to me I will in no wise cast out" ........He didn't say 'Oh,yeah but first help an old lady across the street ,feed the homeless and get a merit badge'.
Anything we do before we are saved ,trying to garner God's attention is worthless.It is like any religious act of "Hey God, look at me,I'm special!"

Not at all!
He just told us that what God wants is our hearts to be toward Him. When this becomes the reality in our lives, then we will automatically do good works out of faith in God ....and fiath that His directives are always better for us and for others than seeking to serve ourselves in this world.

No. Jesus condemned people who did good works so that they can gloat over their good works. We are to do our good works faithfully, and for the Glory of God...not our own.

Christ condemns rather the smug ,self-obsessed "faith" that produces not good works but hatred and passes everlasting sentence on others but never assesses itself.

No, He said to do good to glorify God.
What is not pleasing to God is bragging about what we do, or thinking it saves us.....Ephesians says it is by grace we are saved, through faith, not by works that any man should boast.
