Actually the only requirement is that a weapon can go fully automatic and carry a large capacity magazine. However, you are correct in that an M-16 is NOT a machine gun in that the one issued to standard US forces only has a three round burst capacity. The M4 with SOPMOD kit that Special Forces use however typically is.
"Those are assault rifles."
They're also battle rifles, but at the end of the day they're all machine guns by bolt design, barrel implementation and magazine capacity.
"Those are assault RIFLES.
(Not Assault weapons which is a meaningless political construct).
They are select fire semi or full auto.
A 'machine gun` is generally a full auto only weapon." Pretty much every rifle I listed is fully automatic only, with the exception of the M4 SOPMOD. The MP5 Family is actually classified as sub machine guns, if you want to get technical

The best of all is Ma Deuce, she's been around since the late 1920's and is still currently being used by the military service. For the uninitiated, Ma Deuce is the Browning M-2 50 caliber machine gun.

FYI, M-16 and AK-47s are not really machine guns, but I think the best is the M2 .50 Caliber Heavy Barrel, it is old but very dependable.

Those you have listed are semi-automatic, not machine guns.
If I needed a good machine gun in a firefight, I'd pick out a Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) M249. Nice rate of fire and portable.
