My grandpa gave me this gun to deer hunt with. I promised him I would NEVER sell the rifle, and I wont. What I do want to know is how much it is worth so I can insure it. How can I find out? Also a good site for ammo.

It is a model 71, what else do I look for?

I'd give you $1000 sight unseen and assuming it's the standard rifle (the carbine is worth more, and the deluxe versions considerably more, up to around $3500). The model 71 is considered by many to be the finest levergun ever made. Browning also had Miroku make some in the mid-1980's that are just as good.
Factory loads are pretty limited, and the sole remaining 200 grain bullet load isn't the best, but the major mail-order places like Midway will usually have them. If you handload, grab some Barnes bullets and IMR 4350 and it's a mighty impressive load.
Note also that I have one with a G&H (?) mount and Lyman scope, and the scope mount is worth more than some rifles. This one is worth a professional appraisal; you have a real treasure.

Depending on the condition and features, a Model 71 Winchester can be worth anywhere from $500 to a couple of thousand dollars.

You really ought to have a qualified appraiser look at it and give an evaluation.

Wow! A .348 Winchester. I've only seen one in this caliber, a Browning lever-action for $600. new in the Eighties. I didn't buy because no one was making ammo for it and I didn't want to start reloading again.

Insure your Winchester .348 for a minimum of a thousand dollars. It is priceless. As for the ammo, find the brass, a good reloading manuel and load your own.

Best.

It is priceless, your grandfather left it to you.

You did not mention model, condition or scope, but I would put it on my homeowners at $1,000 just to be safe and cherish it forever. You should be able to find ammo at a good sporting goods shop if not try www.Natchez.com

My grandfather left me a Savage model 99 and a LC Smith double barrel and they too are priceless.

I'd look on gunbroker.com for both ammo, and a good estimation of how much it would be worth.
