I have to travel from Summit NJ to JFK on Monday.
What would be the best bet? My flight is at 6:55 PM, so when possibly should I start from home considering that I am traveling International.

I recommend leaving Summit at 1pm (I'd rather be bored at the airport waiting to depart vs. rushing for the plane).

All of Natives points are good except for one: Take the LIRR from Penn to Jamaica. The one way price is bet $7 and $12 (12 if you buy the ticket on the train). The LIRR has luggage racks. The E train does not. The LIRR operates as an express with few if any stops in between.

Travel Safe.

For the international traveler.

Since you're traveling on an international flight, my advice is get to the airport at least 2 hours before your flight, check you bags and clear security before board the plane. Therefore, the best time you should leave your house is at about 2pm.

And since you going to JFK Terminal 8 from Summit,NJ, its best to avoid the traffic if you take the Morris & Essex Lines (NJ Transit) to Penn Station New York and connect with New York Subway Queens.

Step 1: from Suimmit, NJ take a New York-bound Morris & Essex Line train to Penn Station New York (make sure the destination is "Penn Station New York").

Step 2: at Penn Station New York, transfer to the NYC Subway. Take the Queens-bound "E" train (Blue Line) to Sutphin-Archer/JFK (aka Jamaica Station).

Step 3: at Sutphin-Archer/JFK (aka Jamaica Station), transfer to the Airtrain, which will stop at Terminal 8. The ride from Jamaica Station to Terminal 8 should take about 10 minutes.

Fare
NJT Morristown Line from Summit to New York: $13 off peak round trip ($6.50 one way)
NYC Subway/Airtrain JFK: $7 ($2 for the subway and $5 for the Airtrain)

I hope this Information was very helpful, enjoy your trip.
