The draft while not outlawed is not in any use right now. The last time the draft was implemented was during the Vietnam war. It's used in times of desperate measures when the military is lacking in numbers to accurately and strongly oppose the offense of another foreign country. If you're thinking the draft will be put into effect for Iraq or Afghanistan I wouldn't count on it... It would take major political petitioning for this to happen as it has to go through many levels and approval before it can be put into effect.

There is currently no draft, but men who turn 18 are still required to register with Selective Service just in case.

(Editorial Comment) Although it is highly unlikely that the draft will be revived in an election year, if we don't get an anti war president in office, young men will be at risk. You can "hack" the draft by delaying registration until just before you turn 25. If the draft is revived, they will start calling up younger people first, so by using this trick it will be highly unlikey that you will be called to serve in an illegal and unjust war. If you don't agree with this, then you should enlist!

Be warned that some states won't let you get a drivers license until you prove that you have registered, so take the bus or move to a state without this restriction if you want to try this. It is of interest to note that nobody has been prosecuted for failure to comply with the selective service act since 1986. The government has found it hard to prove in court that the failure to register was "knowing and willful". Besides those that do not register at all, or register late, many move and forget to notify Selective Service of their new address.

We haven't had conscription (draft) since 1973. The Congress repealed that portion of the Universal Military Service and Training Act of 1947 in 1973. Congressman Charles Rangel of New York introduced a bill to restore that portion of the 1947 law last year. But, it has not even received one minute of attention since then. Rangel represents a district with double digit unemployment among males 18-26 years of age. So, he's looking for it to be a jobs program.
It isn't needed. Each branch of the services meets or exceeds its annual quotas for recruitment and retention. The death rate for the military since the invasion of Afghanistan in the Autumn of 2001 has been less than the toll in peacetime for the years before the attack on America.
There is no threat on the horizon which would call for mass amounts of troops to face other masses of troops on a field of combat. So, we don't need the numbers we required for planning and execution during the Cold War.

The military doesn't but the Selective Service does-not anytime soon unless we have to expand back to a1950's through 1970's size military. Unlikely to happen because Congress has to approve it. Actually or most of the draft in modern times there was no war going on. All the talk now about it is to scare people and get them to vate a certain way or to bring demographic balance to the military which has never been and won't happen.

It really depends. Some countries use a mandatory draft (such as in Israel) where everyone must serve a set number of times. Other countries, like the US and Canada, field entirely volunteer armies. The main reason for Drafts is either during a time where cheaper and rapid mobilization of forces are necessary (like during World War I) or in countries that are constantly under threat of invasion (again, like Israel).

The fact that we don't have a draft right now is meaningless. The federal government can reinstitute it quickly. The draft is used when there are not enough people volunteering for one of our wars. To bring back the draft simply vote for politicians that like war.

Never. The draft no longer exists.
It might be brought back someday. Who knows. But as for right now you can't be drafted into the United States Armed Forces.

President Nixon abolished the draft by signing a bill in 1973. The draft cannot be reinstated by Presidential decree, it would take a Congressional act, the same as what revoked it. See the link to prove me correct.

Its nothing to worry about right now. The draft isn't usually used in the US unless we REALLY need it. Example: If a crisis happens and there isnt enough troops who had volunteered
Here is some insight on it, if a draft was to happen.
