My dvd player just gave in and I am thinking of replacing it with a dvd home theater system. I would really appreciate some suggestions.
I don't want to blow my roof off, I just want better sound than what my tv provides at the moment. I don't care for extra frills and dials. In my quick research I read that a reciever is important and for it to be surround 5.1 at least with dolby digital and/or DTS (whatever that means-not exactly elecktro smart)
I have a $400-$500 budget.
Are these things compatable with most tvs? mine is almost 3 years old but not a flat screen plasma type.

Yes, a new receiver is important but what a lot of people forget is the speakers. They are half the system, a great receiver and cheap speakers only provide disappointment. Call Crutchfield, (link below) and speak with one of their people. If nothing else they can educate you on products within your budget and have several full systems below $500. The sell good quality and their support help desk is top notch if you have questions later on. They support for the life of the system.
If you just want to replace your DVD I suggest the Oppo upconverting brand, especially if you have a large SD DVD library. (in addition they give you all the cables needed)
(fyi - DTS stands for Digital Theater System, a sound format that supports 7 channels [7.1] of surround sound audio-very cool)

I would advise against getting a DVD player that is built into a home theater system. If the DVD player dies, you'll need to either repair or replace the whole system, instead of just buying another DVD player for $40 or so.

For your budget, look for a Home Theater In A Box set up with separate units. Separate dvd player and receiver. Also make sure the subwoofer is self powered.

Onkyo's your best bet. Here's a link showing a few models: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Home-Theater-Systems/sem/rpsm/catOid/-12954/N/20012898+20012954+40001308/link/ref/rpem/ccd/categorylist.do
