The highest ranking US Military officer i can find, is :

Col. William Wood, commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, who was killed by a road side bomb in 2005.

A 1-star general lost it a few weeks ago (maybe in October?). I remember hearing about it on the news. So, if you Google it, it will be fairly recent.
