A state audit has found that hundreds of people have used bogus Social Security numbers to obtain food stamps.

From July 2002 to last April, 1,906 people were receiving food stamps from the state Department of Social Services based on invalid Social Security numbers, the audit report stated. Another 1,237 food stamp recipients were using the Social Security numbers of dead people, according to the audit.

DSS security measures had previously disqualified 5,840 people from the food stamp program after determining they were using phony Social Security numbers, according to the audit.

The error rate was much less than 1 percent, which is an acceptable level, the audit report stated.

DSS officials said they have developed new screens to help validate the Social Security numbers of all food stamp recipients.http://wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/2163200/

Mistakes happen. They are acceptable not when our tax dollars are being spent for unlawful purposes. This just shows illegals can and do get welfare, food stamps with their fake documents even though the pro illegal said it could never happen.

I gotta say that understand completely. I've got a friend who was entering a convenience store minding his own business when an uninsured, unlicensed illegal motorist drove into him and the store he was entering. Now he must to go to the Dr. once a month to have fluid drained from his spinal cord. No one will hire him even though he's willing to sign a workman's comp waiver in order to work. Insurance companies won't insure him. He's forced to be on social security and not even getting enough to support his family much less pay his mortgage. He would much rather be working. This state is a 'no fault' state and the person who hit him and the store got a $45 fine from a judge who said there was nothing else he could do.

Mistakes happen. They are acceptable (usually) if those responsible for the mistakes learn a lesson from it and do not repeat the mistake.

It would be nice to think that the state will take this further, but I suspect they will not, for fear of frightening people from claiming legitimately.

Personally, I think this is a much bigger issue than the illegals attending community college (at out-of-state rates) that blew up last week. It'll be interesting to see how this develops. The Gubernatorial candidate that approaches this issue with common sense will get my vote next year.

Stealing is stealing. It doesn't matter if they are rich, poor or illegals . The government should have far better measures to stop this. Once people start finding out this going on, they will more mad at the government for letting this happen.

Come to Maryland where we not only give drivers licenses to illegals, we also sign them up to vote! Pray for us, we have been taken over by the "progressives."

If a person is against a valid and verifiable national ID card - for whatever reasons - they have no reason to complain when illegals forge or steal their identities.
