You need a certified copy with the seal, not just a copy machine copy. If you do not know the right plcae to get a new certified copy in the place where you were born, ( and if you are an American), just enter "birth certificates, and the name of the state where you were born" in the search bar and it will bring up the info. Like this "birth certificates, Michigan". You can order a new one...best to get 2 so you have a spare for the future. See website below for all info on applying for a passport.

Visit the website of the vital records of the state you were born in. Give them your name, birthdate and Mother and Father`s name and they will give you a ceritfied copy. There will be a small fee, like 7 bucks for obtaining your certified copy.

Is the copy stamped with the seal of the registrar of the state in which you were born? If it is, then it shouldn't be a problem. If it is not a stamped or sealed copy, then you need to send away for one of those.
