The stuff to use is Nikwax Tech Wash. Can be used on Gore-Tex, Ultrex, Permatex, Sympatex, and all of the other waterproof/breathable materials.

To restore waterproof/breathable effectivity use Nikwax TX.Direct. It comes as a spray on or wash in. I use the wash in for a balanced application.

It's important NOT to use regular detergents. They can damage the garment.

Also. It's important to dry on a low heat setting. Heat can damage the lamination and/or melt the material.

That will depend on the fabric out of which they are made. Most modern fabrics can be washed. Check the care label, or check with the manufacturer. Most web sites have a page for care of the garment which will tell you about cleaning.

If your dad is afraid that a water repellent coating will be lost there are specialist products, such as Nikwax, that will restore that surface treatment.
