It depends upon what type of eye gel you are talking about. But, in general gels are designed to prolong the exposure of the eye to the gel. Drops tend to stay in contact with the eye for much shorter periods of time which requires the drop to be used more often. The drawback of gels, though, is that they tend to interfere with vision quality more than drops because they are thicker.

It lasts longer than conventional eyedrops. It's best for people with chronic dry eyes to use just before bedtime. That's because eyes tend to dry out more overnight and for people with dry eyes, it can mean eyelids sticking together or to the eyeballs and that can be very painful.
