He should aim to get at least 8 hours asleep, since he is still growing a bit more (9 or 10) wouldn't hurt. Sleep can definitely affect your weight and health. People who are overly tired tend to eat more (especially caffeine and sugar) to get the extra energy they are lacking from missed sleep. Plus he is still going to school, so he needs sleep and a good breakfast to help him think clearly and stay focused during school.

Your 13 year old needs to be getting about 8-9 hours of sleep each night. Maybe 10, but that depends. Sleep works in cycles of about 7-9 hours. Once one cycle is finished, the next one begins. That's why a person who sleeps for 12 hours is usually more tired throughout the day than their 8 hour counterpart.
But to the question, sleeping too much is bad for your metabolism. Your body needs to get up and be active (not that they have to get up and go do manual labor or anything, just not lay there all day). When your metabolism decreases, it's more difficult for your body to process the food intake. That leads to weight gain.

Teenagers need all the sleep they can get... -but your 13 year old sounds like he's about on target (as LONG as he's not going to bed after 11 PM on school nights!).

He should go to bed around 11pm and waking up at his normal time is good. good time for the weekend mines wake up in the afternoon so he is doing very good :)

If he was sleeping late around 1am and after that would affect his weight cause he will get hungry and want to eat while he is up.

Good luck
