I don 't think they're kidding and I don't think they're necessarily insane. I think many of them are very misguided and it seems to be that laziness and fear -- two antitheses of love -- keep them from being open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I like the way religious nuts change their explanations to suit the circumstances.
If you ask, why does God some times sends cancer to 5 year old children, they say God has given us free will and he does not save us from our follies
If you say, if God does not intervene, what is the point of praying, they say if we pray to God will help us.
And if you get them into a real corner, they say , we do not know the will of God.
Reasonable people look at what is happening in the world and decide whether God is the best explanation. Religious people start by believing in God and then explain what is happening to fit their idea of God. I am reminded of Alice in Woderland: "No, no, said the queen. Sentence first, verdict after wards".

I just get a mental image of obese women in moo-moos that haven't been able to leave the house in eight years. Or their son's who can't move out because they have to take care of her. Or the very old people who were raised on a farm instead of school. Basically I just feel bad for them.
By the way, I'm Christian.

I understand that many of them are frothing at the mouth in anger every time someone says something they consider blasphemy.
I used to be the same way, when I was one of them.
That kind of boiling rage will make you say some pretty stupid things.
It also will make you very single-minded of purpose, wanting to "lash out" at the person that just made you angry.
I think that is the reason that often they avoid the subject of the question, knowing that answering it honestly would not be a good way to "get you"
It's always hard to talk to them for this reason. The anger they feel when someone questions their irrational beliefs overrides their logic circuit. It's a fine line you have to walk if you want to get anywhere with them.

I know they're not kidding. Considering I've always had a knack for looking at both sides. I can understand their psychosis. I also used to be christian. Either way it's not all that hard. Just pretend for a moment you can't think rationally. Their "logic" should come to you eventually.

Many people believe that which they impart, regardless of religion or lack thereof. It is the responsibility of the listener to differentiate the lies from the truths.

When I read answers from the religious right it just makes me even gladder than I do not live in the United States of Yankee Doodle Dandy Land.

They'll look you square in the eye, tell you a lie, and mean it from the bottom of their heart.
Anna, why are you yelling little girl?
