The flash card readers are used in digital cameras and other electronic devices. Having the flash card slots in the PS3 just makes it easy to just transfer photos, videos, and music to the PS3.

The flash card readers aren't needed, it's just a nice feature to have. Even though I don't have a digital camera yet, I use the SD flash card slot to transfer multimedia from Laptop to my PS3.

Sony makes digital cameras and that's most likely the main reason why they put the flash card readers in the 60GB and 80GB PS3's.

The new 80GB PS3s are similar to the old 40GB model. They lack the PS2 backwards compatibility, card reader slots, and extra USB ports. I think a company has made a card reader for the PS3, which would be available in the same area of the store as the PS3's accessories.
