I was in the dep program with the us army. While in the dep program I decided that joining the army right now was not right for me. I told my recruiter that I didn't want to join, but he told me that the only way out of the dep program was to signs my final contract, swore in BUT do not get on the plane. He told me that I wouldn't be awol but just consider a meps loss. The reasons I believe him, because I felt he was really trying to help me. I was too naive and believe him, I also felt he did this because he was switching his assignment to Germany a few day after i signed my contract, so he wouldn't get into trouble. I was supposed to shipped out on january 4, 2007. After a couple months I figure out what i want to do. I was going to join the national guard, get my associate degree, and try to get in the interservice physician assistant program. But when I try to get into the national guard I found out that I was Awol. Now my question who do i talk to to get help.

I didn't have enough characters left on the last detail. But the national guard recruiter told me he was able to get me a discharge, and when I call meps they told my I was getting discharge from fort jackson. But when I call fort jackson, they told me i was not getting a discharge from them, and I should turn myself into the nearest military base. Which I did, camp pendelton (a marine base, but there a army reserve unti there), and they told me to go to fort irwin. Just to to sure this was correct, I called forst irwin and they told me the discharge are done throught fort sill in oklahoma. At this point I got pissed, and call meps again and now I am waiting for them to check on my discharge.
I know this is a strange case but if anybody and point me in the right direction on what I should do is welcome.

Don't understand how it could have been AWOL should been an ELS.

I sorry to say I don't think the military is for you. You sound like you are going for education benefits and you will be disappointed because you still have a chance to deploy etc.

I hope you get this straightened out but I really don't feel bad for you.

You should have talked to another recruiter. That guy did you wrong....you can't get sworn in and then not leave...that is AWOL!!! This is what makes me so mad about recruiters...they take naive young kids and do them wrong. You need to talk to someone ASAP so you can get this straightened out.

The remedy is to correct the record that you are not on AWOL. Request the personnel officer of your fomer unit to correct the record.
