I know so many people that hate cats, but really have no reason why. I love my cat. I know a lot of people that have dogs don't like them either, maybe because they compare the 2? I have both, and I love both equally.

I mean, they both show the same amount of affection, so why hate them?

I've heard all sorts of excuses. The most prevalent one is "they stink". Well, they don't. In fact they smell much much better than dogs, rodents, or any other pet you could have in the house. If you clean out the litter box at least once a day like you are supposed to, then you wouldn't even know there's a cat in your house.

"they are antisocial" These people compare cats to dogs. The two are not the same. Not in the least. A cats affection you have to earn, but once you have earned it, there's nothing better.

Cats are elegant creatures. There's no reason for so much hate against them.

I would say that many dog people don't like cats because they enjoy the fawning unearned loyalty that a dog will give you (and cats will not) . Cats are also very much the predator and still have the spark of the wild in them which I think some people who don't take the time to understand , distrust. Many people also don't want an animal companion that if not given respect will show you exactly what they think about such treatment in a swiftly painful and precise manner. For some reason cats have also earned the reputation as "chick" pets so a man who has and loves his cat could possibly be made to feel less macho . As for those who say cats are useless , this has never made any sense to me , cats have been used for centuries as extremely efficient rodent killers , not to mention the entertainment from just watching them play with random things around the house, and being excellent lap warmers = ) .

Hmmm, I think part of the reason is that a cat population can quickly riot out of control and people generally seem a lot less concerned about controlling the number of kittens born and thus they are considered "disposable". I have well-cared for indoor cats, but I also vaccinate, deworm, registrer, spay and neuter my farm cats, however, I seriously doubt any of my neighbours do the same. I know some shoot the surplus cats, other control their cat population by not stopping their hunting dogs from going after them.

Another reason could be many people do not train their cats, maybe because they believe that you can't train cat? As a result they wind up with ill-mannered cats that scratch up everything, walk where-ever they please, bite and scratch because they've never been taught bite-control and how to control their claws.

And finally...ignorance. I've met many people who were weary of my cats, because "cats are untrustworthy", "you never know when they're going to attack you" etc. My cats managed to convert all of them, not to mention the same people's surprise to find that my home does not stink - a misconception that might stem from the idea that the cat use the litter box in the house?

I've experienced the same thing with other people and dogs. Dogs slobber, dogs bark, dogs stink, dogs are stupid etc.

I'm in-between dogs at the moment, but I've had both for a long period of time - and to me they are both wonderful pets. There are of course some differences, but all in all dogs and cats have so much in common that I find it difficult to understand how someone could love one species and hate the other.

I'm glad you asked this question and I was interested in the answers. Cat's are pets for the intelligent, because it's fun to watch them reason things out. My cats are very useful. Just the smell of a cat will make mice seek another place to live. They kill all bugs, and keep me warm in the Winter. It's also a class thing. If you live in the "hood," or in a dirty alley, you will see cats as wild animals. You also can't teach them to fight each other to the death so you can make a cheap living off of them. People from the country deal with a lot of feral cats, and see them as pests that stink up the barn. But people from middle and upper cats backgrounds don't have these derogatory notions. They were usually raised better than someone who just kicks cats because they have nothing else to do and no one taught them any better.

a lot of people do not like cats because they are too independent. Not everyone will admit this but dogs are more submissive. They will obey your command. A cat does nto need you to be happy always. I mean yes some are very cuddly but others do what they want. This drives some people crazy! They hate it. I personally love cats and dogs and i love cats for their independence.

For some people, it's a control thing. You can't really control a cat. For others, they just don't understand cats and mistake the independent "cattitude" as being mean or hateful. Cats tend to do things on their own terms and they will sometimes fiercly resist being forced to do something they disagree with. That bothers people who think animals should be submissive.

I love cats.

"A cat avoids people who coo and try to pet them, but will jump in the lap of someone totally ignoring them (who could be allergic or flat out hate cats)." Why would anyone in their right mind prefer a contrary little **** who always wants to do/be the opposite of what you want?

I think people that are contolling do not like cats because cats are so independent. People that tend to want to be in charge prefer dogs because dogs are sort of "suck ups" whereas cats do their own thing, and may seem aloof at times. I prefer cats as I don't need to control an innocent animal to make myself feel important.

Individual differences is the common denominator. Each of us has likes and dislikes. Maybe you don't want to have a shower in cooled water but i did and you im sure you like the hot one. That the way it is....individual differences...
