Firemen world wide spend their time waiting for emergencies. The spend the time practicing, maintaining their equipment and the firehouse. They also actively patrol looking for fire hazards and doing fire prevention stuff. Ther is not a whole lot of idle time in order to keep your skills up.

this is the police section, didn't you ever hear police and fire are like cats and dogs we don't get along. just picking... Fire is a pretty tough job, (not as hard as policing) but tough. You're going to need to be extremely fit, and in good health.

They arn't just for emergencies. They take shifts operating fuel trucks and checking out aircraft fire hazzards. On the rare occasions... They run take who is ever on the fire truck to the scence.

Keep their vehicles and gear in top notch condition and maintain their own training and physical condition. In other words, make sure their ready if and when they're called on.
