If you work out often enough, 3-5 times a week, you should aim for about .75 - 1.0 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Many assume this is too much, but it is not. When you workout often, your daily nutritional requirements change. So you have need for more protein than they typical sedentary person.

It should be at least 1/2g of protein for every 1lb of body weight or every pound of lean mass would be okay. If you were looking to gain muscle, then it should be at least 1g of protein per 1lb of body weight (or lean mass).

About half your body weight in grams if you're not very active and not too overweight. If you're really active or a weightlifter, you can do 1 g/lb of bodyweight.
