I was told the new Battlestar Galactica show is awesome. I rented the miniseries (the thing that I was told I'm supposed to watch first), and was quite unimpressed. I mean no disrespect, but to me it seemed like the Hercules or Xena TV shows. I wanted to get into it, but just never was able to.

My question is: are any of the later seasons different in terms of story/writing? The guy who told me to watch this show seriously thinks this is the best show possible.

Does anyone have any reason to believe I will have a hugely different opinion about other episodes/seasons. Keep in mind, if I find the best episodes to be 25% better than the miniseries, I will still consider it unimpressive.

Again, no disrespect intended to anyone's favorite show.

Die-hard fan here, so feel free to take this answer with several huge grains of salt. :)

I'd give the rest of the first season a shot. That, to me, represents the absolute best BSG has to offer in terms of writing, acting, and character development. Granted, that's not exactly a rave review for the other two seasons, but I enjoy them all nonetheless. If, after the first season, you can't get into it - don't bother with the rest. It will mean nothing to you unless you get into it.

It's not my favorite show, but it is pretty good. Later it delves into some political themes that are obviously related to the current situation in Iraq and philosophy about what lines should and should not be crossed and what the consequences are of crossing those lines. It has some stories that are duds (the Lee/Kara romance, for example), but it does pose some interesting questions and ethical dilemmas. It all depends upon what appeals to you, I guess.
