It's superstitious nonsense. A lot of people thought the world would end on Y2K too.

(And I don't believe in gods, but I believe in most other things that people believe in. I believe in being nice to others, keeping out of debt, treating animals well, and generally staying out of trouble.)

Why would 2010 be any more likely than this year? At some point this world will indeed end. If we manage to dodge asteroids and gamma ray bursts the sun is coming for us regardless.

To be an atheist the only prerequisite is not believing in deities so beyond that some atheist somewhere is bound to believe it whatever it is. There is no atheist belief system. Any answer you get applies only to that particular person and far from all atheists.

Think about this. Beyond a belief in god what do theists believe?

Quote the part of the bible where it says 'soon' as in near December 13 2007...

2010?
The main end date now seems to be 12/21/12. I actually am a little worried about it. Many different theologies contain that prediction. The Mayan's, the I-Ching, Welsh Merlin, some spider-bot program invented to advise on stocks. Sybil-some ancient oracle that supposedly predicted the birth of Christ-Xianity. There are a few Christian related organizations that believe that is the end date. Scientists/Astronomers (the scientific ones-not the ones who base their religion on it) have shown there will be an unusual alignment of the sun, earth and the middle of the Milky Way on that date.
I can't say I'm 100% atheist b/c there are a few questions that only energetic/spirituality seem to have a more plausible explanation. (Not agnostic about Xianity-about any spirituality) I think some people throughut history may have picked up on it-and filled in the gaps with their own society's beliefs-intentionally or not.
Until that day, I probably won't make a firm decision, though :-)

I haven't heard that many people saying 2010 was going to be the end. 2012, yes, but not 2010.

It's nonsense. It stems from the Mayan calendar ending in December of 2012. It doesn't mean the world will end. It just means it's time to get a new calender.

Doomsday has been around the corner for the last thousand years. I think it is nonsense. You've probably lived through 10 "doomsdays" if you're at least 25 years old.
As for my beliefs, I believe in nothing supernatural with no supporting evidence. That is not the only view atheists have because atheism is simply not believing in a god or gods. Anything else is fair game and varies from person to person.

No, I don't believe the world will end in 2010 or in 2012 for that matter. Why? I don't believe in such things as predicitions of any kind, plus I like to think of myself as an optimisitc person. Why the need for gloom and doom?

As for the second part of your question - in God I don't believe, that's pretty much clear, eh? But I do believe in many other things. For instance I do believe we're all connected in a way and that we do influence each other's lives. Our actions do matter. I believe in a lot of things, like love, humanity, kindness, education, obeying the laws of the country and so on. I just don't happen to worship any of those.

People said the world was going to end in 2000. As far as I know most of us that were here in 99 are still here today. So, no I do not believe the world is going to end.

I believe in the universe and in human beings capacity to grow and love each other.

The current apocalyptic nonsense date is 2012. After the world doesn't end in 2012 the AND will be 2029, when a comet or something comes near Earth.

My question to your question about what we believe in: What parts of the observable world cannot be explained without a god?

There is no way to tell what will happen in the future.

Every attempt has been proven wrong. Religious people believe in prophesy, when it is convenient and ignore or make excuses for prophesies that don't come true.

For instance Jesus told people that he would return before they died, 2000 years ago. Its pretty safe to say they are all dead and he got it wrong, unless you are a mormon and believe that John the revelator is still alive on earth somewhere.

I hope for a better future, but don't waste time trying to determine when life will end, instead I try and make my life and my families and neighbor's lives better right now.

I don't see any reason to believe the world will end in 2010, any more then to believe it will end in 2110. I don't really see any evidence that it will end within my lifetime.

I don't believe in God. But I do believe in the college bowl system over a playoff system. I believe in the designated hitter in baseball. I believe chocolate is a better flavor then vanilla. I believe that onion rings are better then fries. Is there anything else you would like to know?

I hear nonesense world end 2012 not 2010. My lover bet $1000 world not end 2012. He tell of many prediction of end world, some made by Jesus soon in his time. We believe nothing. Beliefs have no proof, we demand proof. There are many gods in world and many poeple say no gods. We enjoy reality, not need delusions (imaginary gods). It hard believe you wonder what atheist have. in japan, Shinto is native religion. Zen buddhism popular too. I never hear you God until come USA. I lived quite well without him all life, not need him now.
